[Movies] Your Top 10 Films of 2017 (So Far)

    2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

MMO-Champion Top 10 Movies of 2017 (based on the 15 highlighted lists below):

    01. Logan (93 points)

    02. Blade Runner 2049 (80 points)

    03. Thor: Ragnarok (56 points)

    04. Dunkirk (49 points)

    05. John Wick: Chapter Two (45 points)

    06. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (44 points)

    07. Baby Driver (38 points)

    08. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (32 points)

    09. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (31 points)

    10. Get Out (27 points)

Note #1: You don’t need to see 10 movies before posting your list.

Note #2: Some 2016 movies are released in 2017 in a lot of countries, and therefore there's usually a lot of movies on the lists that shouldn’t be there. To prevent this, we use the same rule as the Oscars have, which requires the movie to have been publicly screened in Los Angeles for a week in 2017 to be considered a 2017 movie. If you’re in doubt, a quick visit to IMDb should tell you whether or not it’s a 2016 movie (for the most part).

Note #3: Do feel free to use the thread to generally discuss the movies of 2017!

Bold = 10 movies on the list.

    1. John Wick 2 (9/10)
1(t). Kingsman: The Golden Circle: (9/10)
    3. Thor 3 (8.75/10)
    4. Logan (8.5/10)
    4(t). IT (8.5/10)
    6. Baby Driver: (8/10)
    6. CHiPs (8/10)
    8. Split (7.5/10)
    8. Spiderman: Homecoming (7.5/10)
    10. War of the Planet of the Apes: (7.25/10)

I've only seen Split so far, but there is no way John Wick doesn't make me orgasm in the theater.

all the 7/10s ranked in order of my liking them. I felt they were all better than average, but not quite calling them good as they were all flawed, yet not really enough to push up or down, yet still in some ranking order.

Yeah I was pretty tempted to just reserve the top spot for it on my list too.

I liked the first John Wick movie, but I'm surprised it has such a following. Will probably save my money and watch the second one when it gets its home release instead of in theaters.

Why are you surprised, it's pretty much the best straight up American action movie since...well, damn, I don't even remember when America last released an action movie at it's level. The Matrix? Blade 2, maybe? That's still over a decade ago. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there hasn't been other good ones, there was Dredd, the Bourne series, the dumb fun of The Expendables and the ridiculously over the top awesomeness of the Fast and Furious series from 5 onwards, but none of them have so much that appeals to a true action cinemaphile as John Wick. Even Asia, which has been doing better than the US as far as action cinema goes hasn't done too much that tops it. I mean The Raids are up there, maybe a few others, but still, that's upper echelon material easily.

You got a classic action revenge plot(though the hero avenging a dog rather than a girl or a kid or a double cross is a minor twist), you got hand to hand martial arts fighting, you got high performance car action, you got a load of amazingly choreographed gunplay(with the nightclub sequence ranking as pretty much the best cinematic shootout since the glory days of John Woo), and it's all shot clearly and cleanly, no ultra-closeups or shaky cam making it hard to follow. Keanu Reeves is convincing as a badass(cause he is, he's been doing martial arts since the original Matrix, and you can watch vids of him taking tactical gun combat courses and see him doing rapid target acquisition, weapon transitions, fast reloads, etc with real firearms, no studio trickery or effects or editing), and you got a bunch of recognizable faces in smaller roles(Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, David Patrick Kelly who should be very familiar to classic action fans) as well. It features that classic "loyalty/honor" concept that's been a staple of classic action movies since the dawn of film making, it's got a hero who gets hurt(and actually reloads multiple times throughout the film), they didn't "tone it down" by aiming for a PG-13 rating, it even does some world building(you don't get that in every action movie). Every single person I know who considers themselves an real action aficionado loves John Wick, and if you like pure action movies at all, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't love it too. Now...if you're not an action fan in the least, yeah, it's not gonna be for you at all...but as someone who loves the genre, I'll take a rewatch of John Wick over the entire best picture nominations of 2015 and 2016 combined, cause I know, without a doubt, I will find John Wick more enjoyable.

Maybe not, but you said you were surprised John Wick had such a following, and I was explaining just why it has that following.

Updated. John Wick predictably takes the number 1 spot. I don't expect it to leave the spot, either.

Just saw a few last January XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, Underworld: Blood Wars, Monster Truck and the one that I enjoyed the most is Kung Fu Yoga. Looking forward to see Fifty Shades Darker tonight

Better or worse than the first?

Hard to say. The world is bigger, there's more action(and still spectacularly choreographed), but the stakes aren't as emotionally motivated this time, and it obviously doesn't have the surprise factor that the original one had.
