    Children and the Internet

    https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-...ts-statistics/

I shouldn't be surprised but some of these statistics are rather worrying...

    • One in five 8 to 11 year olds and seven in ten 12 to 15 year olds has a social media profile.
    • 1 in 3 children have been a victim of cyberbullying.
    • Almost 1 in 4 young people have come across racist or hate messages online
    • Around 1 in 7 young people have taken a semi-naked/naked picture of themselves. Over half went on to share the picture with someone else.
    • There were over 3,700 counselling sessions with young people who talked to Childline last year about online sexual abuse.
    • In 2015, the Internet Watch Foundation identified over 68,000 URLs containing child sexual abuse images.

Don't get me wrong the internet is an awesome thing too but I worry about these statistics getting worst

Parents have zero excuse these days about looking after their childrens' internet wellbeing.
Many grew up in a time where the internet wasn't just a couple of wires at Cern so they should know what is on it.

Is it asking too much for people to take responsibility for their own inaction? Look after your children's internet health as you would their physical health.

Honestly, sounds like an issue that will probably be fixed over time.

Current older generation, for the most part, has little to no idea about how the internet works. Next generation that has kids will know more, and will know what to look out for.

Yeah, it's still kinda disturbing, but this is just something that falls under parents not looking after their kids in my opinion.

It should be mandatory that everyone using the internet should look at tubgirl for 5 minutes every 5 years to stop them becoming whiners.

Basically this. Parents are letting their kids on the internet and not watching what they are doing. That along with buying them things like iPhones when they are like 8 is just full on retarded and doesn't help anyone.

We talked it over and decided to get an internet filter. I know the kid can go to a neighbor's house or figure out how to get around it but it's a start. Facebook and Twitter are on the filter list.

Personally -if- I had kids it would be NO internet or phone until High School (age 11). Unfortunately that's easier said than done what with friends having internet access and kids having phones in school

Parents are going to have to adapt to this changing environment like everyone else. Hopefully we keep making technology to help them too.

I think the ignorance argument doesn't hold as much water as say 10 years ago. A hefty % of parents of kids between 5-15 already know the dangers of the internet it's just they don't care because internet is the new child distraction tool

All in the parent's supervision. If they are failing at that, there is no one to blame but themselves.

What does 'consulted' mean? Was she going there to look up stuff about sex or something? Trying to figure out how to please her wo/man?

A social media profile, which probably counts your whatsapp account as well, is pretty much a requirement for social organization these days. These are your Mailbox and your Landline for all intends and purposes. Teaching kids how to be responsible with them is something that any decent parent should actually take a look at.

Only 1 in 4 for hatemessages? Lol. Filthy casuals.

Selfies of any kind are something that you should also teach your kids about .. seriously. Teach you kid about that shit.

The abuse and exploitation aside, this is mostly "welcome to the real world" stuff.

Honestly, I'm concerned with the "traumatized" bit. Seriously, are doctors injecting pansy genes into people or something? All this "protect da chillrenz!" crap is absurd. Yeah, monitor their activities and do your best to prevent them from danger/harm. But FFS, it's just sex.

It could've been torture porn or something, who knows? The closest I ever got to being traumatized was meatspin and the pain olympics, though I got over being weirded out by the former whereas the latter is still disgusting to me.
