Two Scoops - NYT: Firing Comey took pressure off. WaPo: Sr. Officials are suspects

Trump's out of the country, that means no time like the present to start a new volley against him.

    Case in point:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/19/u...omey.html?_r=0

WASHINGTON — President Trump told Russian officials in the Oval Office this month that firing the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, had relieved “great pressure” on him, according to a document summarizing the meeting.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”

The conversation, during a May 10 meeting — the day after he fired Mr. Comey — reinforces the notion that Mr. Trump dismissed him primarily because of the bureau’s investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian operatives. Mr. Trump said as much in one televised interview, but the White House has offered changing justifications for the firing.

The White House document that contained Mr. Trump’s comments was based on notes taken from inside the Oval Office and has been circulated as the official account of the meeting. One official read quotations to The Times, and a second official confirmed the broad outlines of the discussion.

How stupid do you have to be to say half the things he says on record.

Oh and the Washington post now too:

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

The revelation comes as the investigation also appears to be entering a more overtly active phase, with investigators shifting from work that has remained largely hidden from the public to conducting interviews and using a grand jury to issue subpoenas. The intensity of the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks, the people said.

The sources emphasized that investigators remain keenly interested in people who previously wielded influence in the Trump campaign and administration but are no longer part of it, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Flynn resigned in February after disclosures that he had lied to administration officials about his contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Current administration officials who have acknowledged contacts with Russian officials include Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as Cabinet members Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

I bet it's totally Jared Kushner by the way.

Putting more evidence behind the notion that yes, Trump is dumb enough to think that firing Comey would largely end the Russia investigation.

    Trump does brain things good.

If this admissible Donnie is through dealing. Even if he had nothing to do with Flynn being shady, even if the Russians did nothing (which cant even be denied anymore), his obstruction will do him in.

If I was him I wouldn't come back. Just resign while off the plan from a bathroom stall or something where its harder for them to drag you back.

Considering if he would just shut up a lot of his problems would blow over but he always has to open his mouth and make it worse.

This would be really funny if only it really, really wasn't.

On a (possibly) unrelated note, we haven't seen much of Bannon recently? ...

EDIT: The conspiracy theorist in me says that Bannon is a/the source of the leaks, and has been since Kushner kicked him off the top table.

Probably because Trump plays favorites and who his favorite is can change every week.

Trump is stupid, but it's more narcissism than stupidity that drives this. When you enable a massive narcissist to the degree he has been it magnifies everything.

His narcissism has basically been cranked to 11.

The article also had this nugget
A third government official briefed on the meeting defended the president, saying Mr. Trump was using a negotiating tactic when he told Mr. Lavrov about the “pressure” he was under. The idea, the official suggested, was to create a sense of obligation with Russian officials and to coax concessions out of Mr. Lavrov — on Syria, Ukraine and other issues — by saying that Russian meddling in last year’s election had created enormous political problems for Mr. Trump
Yes. Apparently this excuse is that he was trying to make the Russians feel sorry for him BECAUSE THEY MEDDLED IN THE ELECTION.

Trump has admitted to obstruction at least half a dozen ways so far.

I keep trying to think back to Clinton, Bush and Obama years. There were definitely some huge weeks of news. They had their share of success and failures obviously. But, I'm fairly certain there were a lot of weeks where they just did their job and things moved along. They did what they needed to do with day-to-day stuff and government more or less functioned properly.

Has there even been one single week this year without some kind of huge fuck up either happening or getting revealed? I keep thinking what the fuck is going to happen next week to make this even more of a shit show. I've found myself thinking that every week for quite awhile now.

There hasn't been such a week. This is exactly what happens if you were to drink floor cleaner. What would happen? You'd start shaking and throw up everywhere.

America swallowed something it shouldn't have November 9th. It's trying to puke it back up.

I bet he finished that statement with some finger guns. Golf course executive dealmaking skills, right there.
