Gray Matter explained it way better than I did

I dare say I believe that the new masteries won't be as restrictive in terms of story/area progression as they were at the start of HoT, but I suppose that'll be something we have to find out the hard way. Consider me cautiously optimistic that Anet learned from HoT.

Honestly, I like things like the mastery system and lack of having to chase gear all the time. Odd/ironic I would say that, being I play FF14 mostly at this point.

You are allowed to like more than one mmo ;-)

And if all of them were the same, then what's the point?

This is the only elite spec that I'm afraid of.
Hope they give them either mediocre damage or reduce heavily the access to stealth, anything except backstab damage from stealth on 1200 range.
But knowing ANet, they'll give Snipers the opposite, insane damage and stealth reliant.

Shhh...don't say that too loud on this forum.

Part of why I will advocate this game, despite having not played in nearly 2 years, is they do dare to be somewhat different.

A sniper should really have a 3000 range, 15k damage and a 5 seconds CD

There's literally nothing that would prevent them from simply locking item power where it is now, but just adding 5 more actual character levels instead.

I'm not shitting on it as a broken/bad system or criticizing folks that like it, but it's largely just a different coat of paint rather than an actual design departure from adding levels in an expansion.
My problem with masteries - and indeed, a lot of HoT - isn't that they add power but that it's just another layer of grind and investment added to the game that was never supposed to be there in the first place.

Yeah, I know MMO players seem to need carrots, but there are tons of other games for that. GW2 was marketed and presented heavily on the idea that you wouldn't need to do those things. That you'd always just be able to jump in and do whatever and never be "behind" in any way.

HoT changed that in quite a few ways. Not HUGE ways, not like coming into WoW mid-expansion or something, but the changes are there and they speak to a shift in the philosophy in the company. Especially the changes that DO affect player power. A HoT player is much stronger than a Vanilla player, by quite a bit.

If Expansion 2 doubles down on that, I don't think I'll be buying it at all.

Aside from most meta builds utilizing the elite specializations, what makes a HoT player much stronger than a Vanilla player? Genuinely curious, as I've never much followed high-end fractals and raiding.

I've not really played since finishing the Heart of Thorns storyline, does anyone know the likelihood of Tengu being added there? Always been keen on those guys.

So Heart of Thorns could very well drop to $10 like the base game did before it finally went F2P a couple months later?

    I'd bite on that.

I hope the expansion makes me want to come back to the game. I started playing when it launched and always felt like the game had the potential to be incredible.
