Most new prisons are being built in rural America

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...ration-n771061

    https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/02/u...f-prisons.html

Why can't the people of rural America be inspired to make the world a better place? Why can't they build spaceships, space technology, and go to other countries on humanitarian missions?

The people who are being sent to these prisons should be sent to effective anti drug programs and the prison companies should use their money to fund space exploration and humanitarianism in third world countries!

They are being located in rural areas to bolster population numbers in the next census so those states get more Reps, you can take wild guess which party is going to benefit the most.....

Prisoners don't count as residents, do they? Please tell me you made that up.

If urban associated prisons can't expand and keep costs down, then rural prisons will naturally pop up. It's a cost issue, not a sinister rural plot.

We are talking about the GOP, who have already proven to have highly nefarious methods - to the point of SCOTUS saying they are illegal. It does seem like a lot of work for a short uptick in census, but I wouldn't put it past them - especially if those affected areas are close to breaching the next Rep number.

Yep, Criminal University, where students come to become bitter, anti social, racist, sexist, and generally improve their skills to victimized those they were sent there to begin with to be punished for.

They count for the census so you can gerrymander the electorates, but they can't vote because the US is allowed to disenfranchise prisoners.

    It's really the perfect crime.

They are built in rural areas because the land is cheaper and it's less likely to be opposed.

Rich folk don't want to look at prisons.
Prisons aren't very beneficial to the economies or urban areas.
Prisons ARE beneficial to the economies of rural areas.
There's more space in rural areas.

It's not a weirdo conspiracy to get more votes. Felons can't even vote.

Not every country has a region available such as Siberia to use for their prisons.

Can't blame people from rural areas to want a piece of the pie when you have made putting people in jail big business.

Felons may not be able to vote, but there presence in those districts counts towards the census, and House of Representatives members are apportioned based on census numbers.

These are good points. Prisons definitely create jobs (good paying ones) for the community they are built in.

But the population does count towards Rep numbers and displacement for gerrymandering. I wouldn't put it past the GOP to do this - not after all the shit they've pulled in voter suppression and disenfranchisement.

(prisoners can't vote, but the population could be used to increase the population of one area, giving it more Congressional Reps, etc)

I honestly didn't know they counted towards census numbers.

I didn't either until this post came up. I didn't want to believe it until someone posted a link.
