'Whoever leads in AI will rule the world’: Putin to Russian children on Knowledge Day

I know rt.com is propaganda but in this case they are probably accurate in their reporting.

So if we act responsibly and don't develop military AI, will the rest of the world follow suit?

I think we'll have to develop military AI.

Then again the reason we can't detect aliens might be that they developed AIs too, and the AIs killed them off.

Vladimir Putin spoke with students about science in an open lesson on September 1, the start of the school year in Russia. He told them that “the future belongs to artificial intelligence,” and whoever masters it first will rule the world.
“Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind. It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

However, the president said he would not like to see anyone “monopolize” the field.

“If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with entire world, the same way we share our nuclear technologies today,” he told students from across Russia via satellite link-up, speaking from the Yaroslavl region.

During the 45-minute open lesson (the standard academic hour in Russia), Putin also discussed space, medicine, and the capabilities of the human brain, pointing out the importance of cognitive science.

“The movement of the eyes can be used to operate various systems, and also there are possibilities to analyze human behavior in extreme situations, including in space,” Putin said, adding that he believes these studies provide unlimited opportunities.

The open lesson was attended by students and teachers from 16,000 schools, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. The total audience exceeded one million.Vladimir Putin spoke with students about science in an open lesson on September 1, the start of the school year in Russia. Not good. I was holding out hoping Putin wouldn't notice AI is important.

I can't wait until we get to see a self aware AI that creates it's own path - hopefully it's not mean lol..

OT: IDK, MotherRussia is right on a lot of stuff out there, but idk in particular if AI is the top level - IMO

OP where did putin mention military ai? Pretty sure he meant business...and some other country would try to gain some monopoly which sounds like total bs that's impossible

I'm not sure who is talking the most nonsense, Putin or OP...Sure someone could get an advantage but it would be brief...as for Russia sharing ai, that's a no-no, u don't give away economic advantages..

For everything else wrong with the man, I can appreciate a leader who has such a positive view towards education. Especially while currently being stuck in a country with leaders that seem hell bent on destroying it. I had never even heard of "Knowledge Day" in the US. In fact it seems to be "Ignorance Day" at least once a week.

AI can be programmed to be blindly loyal to Mother Russia easier than people.

I'm sure Putin is talking about AGI or superintelligence.

As far as AI implemented in the world now, an AI leader would be lucky to have a 1 year lead before a competitor can match everything they have done. Even without access to the source code.

Yeah he seems to be referring to general intelligence, and yes; the country that develops it first will likely dictate the course of humanities future for good or bad. The first artificial general intelligence would have an insurmountable lead in any intellectual arms race, it would be able to make itself exponentially more intelligent in weeks, days, hours, minutes; or even seconds after coming online with no chance of any runners up keeping pace.

That is what an intelligence explosion is.

At that point it could quite quickly overwhelm and disable any computer systems connected to it, which if you were aiming to make the most powerful general intelligence possible would be almost all of them and maintain what's called a singleton indefinitely (systems not connected would have vastly inferior computing power and be unable to compete). Then, assuming that same country has solved the control problem they would be able to shape the future of civilisation and life on Earth. Forever.

Even without general intelligence, the leaders in AI research will gain enormous and insurmountable military and economic advantages in the future. Biological evolution cannot keep pace with technological evolution, eventually machines will be better than us at everything. Already the things they do better they are hundreds to thousands of times more capable than humans.

We already got AI that play the stock markets... so why not?

Stuxnet has three modules: a worm that executes all routines related to the main payload of the attack; a link file that automatically executes the propagated copies of the worm; and a rootkit component responsible for hiding all malicious files and processes, preventing detection of the presence of Stuxnet.[8] It is typically introduced to the target environment via an infected USB flash drive. The worm then propagates across the network, scanning for Siemens Step7 software on computers controlling a PLC. In the absence of either criterion, Stuxnet becomes dormant inside the computer. If both the conditions are fulfilled, Stuxnet introduces the infected rootkit onto the PLC and Step7 software, modifying the codes and giving unexpected commands to the PLC while returning a loop of normal operations system values feedback to the users.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuxnet

This is the one they sent after Iran's nuclear bomb program. It got into their production plants and spun the centrifuges so fast that it ruined them. And Stuxnet is not an AI.

Imagine an AI that infiltrated enemy networks, looked for ways to damage things like a human would and then attacked. It wouldn't mind if it died because it would have a copy back home. Networks are the native environments for AI, it's like how the ocean is a native environment for dolphins.

Just recently, they had built a couple of computers that had such good AI that they ended up actually creating their own language. They destroyed the computers. Look it up. Kind of creepy.

I'm rooting for it, I welcome our digital overlords. I'm not convinced yet that a "real AI" will want to kill humans...I like to think it will change humans in some way.

Yeah, and they had AI 10 years ago that did this as well. It wasn't shut down because of danger, but because if you can't understand what the AI is saying or doing...it kinda defeats the purpose of testing AI communication.

It was one of many failed experiments and many others will follow.

I'm pretty much just curious to see how far we can get in technology in my life time. I hope to see the end of humanity as a race, but that's simply not in the cards.

How? Every computer would have to be closely monitored for ridiculously basic things like matrix multiplication.

Good thing that AI is only partly software; you have to have the correct hardware to run it on. Things like artificial synapses, fast access high density storage and the like are all required for AI. AI will be defined by a machine that can truly learn, and so far we do not have that.

People scared at the future are not new and have always been wrong, so its pretty much a non issue to me overall.

Historically, the hardware requirement used to get SoTA AI results has been hundreds of times higher than the average PC, but also hundreds of times lower than top HPCs. It will probably stay that way, above casual desktops but still not exclusive to corporate mega clouds and HPC.
