I hate PvE though so i have little interest in doing this mode

I only play ranked games BUT I've tried this, duo-ed with someone on onslaught but it wasn't successful.

I think it requires ALOT of teamwork (reminds me of some MMORPGs where we challenged some nests/dungeons). You'll need some teamcomps, certain people to get certain items and perform certain roles, combined with teamwork on how best to kite (at least kite in 1 direction) and when to attack, when to run.

The problem with teaming with pubs are that some people don't really know/care about what they are doing. They get out of position and die too fast, I think it requires co-ordination to take everything down.

I think even MMORPGs may be easier, I remember taking on a dungeons bosses myself, just making sure that I evade everything, but this is much harder, bullets come from everywhere.
