Lightbulb Upgrade time - it's time to get with the times

Budget: <$800 (excluding monitor), $500 for monitor
    Resolution: 2560x1440, must be 144hz
Games / Settings Desired: Overwatch, PUBG, future AAA titles - High/Ultra
    Country: Canada
Parts that can be reused: Case, SSD, HDD
Do you need an OS?: No
Do you need peripherals?: Monitor 24-27" 144hz 1440p

My current specs are (looking to replace the underlined parts):
    CPU: i5-2500k stock
    GPU: GeForce GTX760
    MoBo: ASRock Z68 Ex3 Gen3
    Cooling: stock
    PSU: Antec HCG-520M
    RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz
    HDD: 500GB Seagate ST500
    SSD: 120GB ADATA SX900
    Case: Thermaltake Mk1 Chaser
    Monitor: Samsung S27D390H

    Notes:
    - I am looking for a future-proof build, 5-7 years
    - The Samsung will be a 2nd monitor, need a 144hz as main
    - Reason for split budget is cause I prefer buying the internals ASAP and the monitor later
    - Feel free to tell me that I shouldn't upgrade something, maybe I should OC the i5 instead of buying the new one?
    - Or the other way, please tell me if I should save up and get a higher tier product for my future-proof needs

    Cheers,
    Frex

Not to burst your bubble, but if you want to play games at 1440p@144Hz, be prepared to dump at least 500$ on GPU

not sure if you need a PSU or if you have a decent one

reuse the case and storage drives

also, if you want to 'future proof' I would recommend to wait for 8th gen Intel, the 200 series chip will not accept the 8th gen CPU's
    PM me weird stuff :3

What would you suggest if I go for 1080p 144hz?

As Thunderball said: there's absolutely no point in buying anything Intel until october 5th, i5-8600K is your best bet. Alternatively, get a R5 and a B350 now and call it a day.

Thanks Hextor and Thunderball. I'll hold off until then as far as the CPU goes.

    Follow questions: (with having i5-8600k)
    - Considering I want 1080p 144hz which GPU would you recommend?
    - And if I wanted 1440p 144hz is the 1080 the bare minimum?

    - 1080.
    - No, if you want high-ultra in AAA games 1080 Ti is the bare minimum.

Hi, just for you. Is your set capable of 1440p-144Hz (if not, please point a number which it's stable) and on which games you play? thanks.

I dont really understand what you mean by set, but I'll assume you mean my PC setup. I'm running a 1080p 144Hz monitor with a 1070 and yes, I'm getting there most of the time in the games where that matters: OW, CS:GO, BF1 (not max settings, but there is no point honestly). I dont play much of that stuff anymore but my rig can definetely handle it.

of course the PC setup (under the signatures) 1080p 144Hz is like a dream to me already. Great, I'm down with FPS games too, I'm waiting for my set to arrive for battleground, I hope gtx1050ti handles it fine. Thanks anyway.
