Running the clock isn't exactly an ideal strategy here, as others have pointed out, namely because we are entering an election year.
So pushing the investigation right into said election means that the headlines aren't going to be filled with Trump's white supremacist campaign promises, but a stream of leaks and declassifications that give nothing but the image of a corrupt, greedy gremlin who defaulted into power.
The stars seemed to have aligned in terms of timing, the indisputability of how bad Trump's actions look to everyone rather than just Democrats or Never Trumpers, and having a House majority willing to pursue the leads.

Trump isn't popular or competent enough (i.e. not FDR) to pull it off.
He doesn't even need to concede defeat in the election. Once his legal term of office runs out and his successor sworn in, he stops being President of the United States - and then becomes a private citizen trespassing in the White House.
If he had the backing of every government agency, the military, and a much larger base of highly activist (and urban) support, maybe. But given how he is toxic and despised by the majority of the country...Not a chance.

Even discounting where said employees come from, Texas' growth is all in urban areas which are known to lean more to the left.
They're literally crowing about a phenomenon which might one day ensure the Democratic Party is undefeatable by virtue of having both Texas and California in play.

McConnell and the rest are facile because they have the luxury of doing so - it costs them nothing to simply do nothing. Actually helping Trump keep office despite losing an election or having run out his term limit? That involves a lot of effort and a huge amount of risk for very little potential reward.

What is the Republican party doing in the midst of all this shit?
Not much, just sending out fake Census-lookalike soliciting donations and trying to dupe people.

I wasn't saying it's a good or bad strategy. I'm just saying that all the shit that has been going on should have raised a lot of red flags, whether any of it is true or not, no party should ride the wave of somebody so toxic and potentially damaging.
I've never had much understanding for republicans but they had commitment to their country's position, external policies and influence in the world. Trump is the Antichrist to everything they have ever stood for.
They should get rid of this roadkill-wigged clown, lick their wounds, sort their shit out, get rid of McConnell for gross incompetence, and come back in the next election or the one after that with a sensible candidate.
"I am proposing something huge, really huge and a beautiful and peaceful resolution to stop all of this. I am leaving the office of the President of the United States to become God-Emperor of the World. Really big things are gonna happen. We're gonna get a lot of things done this way and the fake news and democrats cannot interfere this time."
"You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation."

So, he is not provocative, he merely implies that all of the victims were willing, and at least 16-years old (the earliest report was of a 14-year old victim), and even that buying sex is legal in the relevant jurisdiction.
I wonder what he writes when he is being provocative.
They won't. We've all seen Priebus' memo about the GOP needing to ditch the bigotry and try to sell fiscal conservatism to a broader, more multicultural demographic. That was in 2012, and here we are.
The Republican Party had its chance to get its act together and chose to double down on becoming the party of evangelical white supremacists and failed. All we can do at this point is keep beating it down until a more moderate right wing party emerges to replace it.
