Once again, it's time for Guess the Speaker!
"That sounds like Trump."Here’s the thing. I don’t have teams. Everyone’s talking about teams. I’m the team
Yes.
"Which anonymous source claims Trump said something so obviously stupid?"
Actually, Trump said it in public.
This is not the first time Trump has suggested his impeachment would cause a problem. But this might be the first time he suggested a recession. The comment came as part of a lengthy rant against the impeachment inquiry, which Trump derided as a "phony deal" focused on a "perfect" call he had with the Ukrainian president. He went on to say that if anything came of this inquiry, he thinks it could plunge the country into economic downturn.
"I will say this: If anything ever happened with this phony witch hunt that the Democrats are doing ... I really believe you’d have a recession, depression the likes of which this country hasn’t seen," Trump said, questioning how Democrats could impeach "one of the most successful presidents."
"Which is what you would say, if --"
No no, that's just stupid. All signs point to a recession anyhow, yes, so I'd be tempted to blame something, but all signs remain that McConnell will block Trump from being impeached successfully. Then, when a recession comes anyhow, he has no useful excuse. The only way this works is if Trump wants to preserve his legacy, after being thrown out of office.
"Isn't this supposed to scare people to defending him, like when he suggested people should vote for him or the DOW would crash?"
GOP lawmakers are not as intentionally ill-informed as the rabid fanbase. They know full well Trump's policies are pushing the economy down. Remember, they didn't vote for any of the trade war, which ate the tax cut for the rich on most Americans and then some extra. It's one thing to convince Cousin Billy Bo Bob Jr. in Swampwater, MI that his stock portfolio would crash if the US elects a commie librul (which is a waste of time, he has no stock portfolio). It's completely different to convince rich old white men who want to stay in a position of power, when Trumps words and actions threaten that money and power they value.
