I've said this before, but Reagan was essentially the same as Trump--just without a Twitter account. He and his shrew wife hated minorities and the poor and he himself was a narcissistic asshole with dementia/Alzheimers.
I don't think he had exactly the same level of blind support that Trump does, but then there wasn't easy access to conspiracy theory echo chambers then.

Tenlo does have a point. Reagan's cult really "took off" after there was enough time and six feet of dirt for history to bury his less pleasant aspects - and even that seems to have taken a turn with the recent declassified materials that clearly paint him as like, a virulent racist. Trump's a novelty in that his unpleasant aspects are not only on display, but are being actively excused or even celebrated.
I'ma get into borderline territory here on the subject I broach so please be forgiving, but...there's been quite a lot of ink spilled in left wing philosophical circles regarding the reasons for the bar having apparently collapsed. Some blame it on sheer political opportunism, but that really doesn't cut to the heart of it; one opinion that does has to do with Obama.
I want to just illustrate something that I don't think a lot of people quite appreciate, and that was the sheer weight of expectation that came with an African American becoming President. The entire reason the Republicans had to go into hyperbolic hysterics or just blatantly make shit up about Obama is indicative of how little there actually was to criticise (at least from the Republican standpoint, since the things you can validly criticise Obama for the Republicans are guilty of anyway). He was the very picture of the immigrant experience that worked his way up from relative obscurity, was in a stable, loving marriage to a very dignified and respectable woman and with two intelligent daughters that are as close to "classic" American teenager as you can get. There were never any affairs, never any indications of marital strife or family dysfunction. So they had to go after his choice in suit color, or what kind of mustard he likes, or that his favourite vegetable is arugula and not a McRib. He had his political scandals and crises, as every President does, but when you really compare it to previous administrations - it was a stable transition of power from both ends and the country recovered from economic crisis - he did very well, considering a good half of the country was desperately waiting for him to fail.
How is this relevant? Consider that Trump's disgusting conduct is a feature, not a bug. He, in many ways, is a pointed message from the whitest parts of America at the rest of the country: "The worst of us will be better than the best of you."

So I was joking about this, but I hate that absurd jokes can become a potential reality.
This wall is racist, yes. But I'm glad facts, nuance, and context doesn't seem to have butted into your reality yet.
And I mean, I live in an apartment complex with plenty of immigrant families. I don't know them too well (or any of my neighbors), but our interactions have always been lovely and I'd have no problem having more move in.
Not that "THEWALL" is actually doing anything because you know...it can be defeated by...
A ladder
Consumer-grade power tools
Rope
Tunnels
The fucking wind
So it's really largely just a gigantic art installation, as it's doing nothing to accomplish the job it's supposed to. I guess Republicans finally decided to support the arts, but just chose the shittiest fucking art installation possible.
