NPR went back to his initial Rose Garden address announcing the national emergency. And he made a ton of promises/claims more than a month ago, so let's see how he did!
Formal partnership with Target for...something - Nope, no announcement.
Google tracking project that Google wasn't leading...well, it's live...in CA...for the Bay Area...in beta...so not so much. - Nope
Drive through testing - Most of the retailers present for the address did actually have any drive through testing. Walmart had 2 sites, Walgreens had 2 sites, CVS had 4 sites. So that's 8 sites across the entire US.
Home testing - Trump had an executive from LHC up to brag about how his company, that provides in-home care, would be doing in-home testing! Except they haven't been, with sites in over a dozen states saying that they had neither test kits nor training and had not administered any tests.
But he did do some things!
Waiving interest on student loans? Yep, awesome!
Waiving regulations to give medical professionals more flexibility to respond? Yep, cool.
And didn't do even more other things.
Waiving restrictions for doctors who have a license to practice in one state but not another where they may be needed? Well...that's done at the state level and Trump can't do that. So this was a miss.
"Fill[ing the US Strategic Reserve] right up to the top" with crude oil? Also not done because...Trump needs Congress to appropriate the money for it, as they hold the purse strings. So again, a promise that's literally outside his power.
But there are plenty of tests being produced!...just not enough. And testing labs already over capacity. And the swabs/tubes needed to collect the samples are in short supply.
Interesting insight from a former USAID administrator on the public-private partnerships under Trump -
