I can't believe we are here. I can't believe a President would actually announce this and our Congress will not do anything. Of course the GOP let him get away with so much, so why would you want to play by the rules.

    Oh goodness.

Trump retweeted an old tweet/Facebook of his about Cinco de Mayo. Which one? The one him sitting in front of a taco bowl (no idea the connection) and bragging about Trump Tower makes best taco bowls.

Leaving for that night shift now so I'll have to update when I come back in about 6-7 hours, but we're above 2,100 deaths for the day currently. If it gets to about 2,300 then it'll be in line with previous weeks. Either way there does not appear to be a clear dip in numbers yet. Still on pace to hit 100k before the end of the month.

Though I'll be interested to see if media follow up and dig into this a bit more to see if, by some miracle, this is actually the case or if someone in the official chain decided to insert that factoid so that it would be less embarrassing for one/all of the parties involved.
Remember that asymptomatic doesn't mean 'you don't notice anything', but means 'you don't develop symptoms at all'. I'd be willing to bet a months salary that a good chunk of these workers had very mild symptoms, and no cough, maybe they just felt fatigued for a day or two, and powered through without telling anyone. You've probably gone through flu infections like this in the past yourself, you just feel somewhat exhausted a day or two, but had no fever or any other severe symptoms.

Sh*t. I was hoping things were actually getting better.

That 3,000 a day dead while/because states are opening back up isn't going to be sufficient deterrent, is it?

    EDIT: It isn't.

Over the first weekend or May 2020, Texas health officials reported the greatest two consecutive-day gains in the number of new COVID–19 cases, with more than 2,000 new cases added on May 2 and May 3.

There were 1,293 new cases of the virus reported Saturday. That’s the second greatest single-day gain since the pandemic began. On April 10, the state recorded 1,441 new cases.

Christ this is going to be bad in the long run.
What did the task force actually do other than give Trump a platform to give campaign speeches and suggested people inject or ingest toxic materials?

I think that's probably their single biggest, and probably only, accomplishment so far.

I'm actually rather interested if there is a real answer. Most of the action came from local state/city governments. The CDC is the one who issued recommendations. The task force just seemed to be a bunch of posturing.

Looking around...the only accomplishments legit seem to be "held daily briefings". I'm sure there's more, but if there is the White House sure isn't talking about it.

Welp, Ron DeSantis might be in trouble: COVID-19 seems to have been in Florida since January, two months before the first 'official' confirmed cases and Ron tried to cover it up. These cases weren't added to the states 'official' tally until March at the earliest and this Saturday at most recent.

He's in charge is the thing.

That and the state Department of Health quietly removed that information from a state government website last night.

I was going to say that that's a pretty bold assertion but...

The state pulled the records off its website late Monday without explanation.
    Yeah...that's a pretty reasonable assertion.

Town Hall has thoughts about bailing out the blue states. They hate it!

The whole idea of the federal government giving money to states is a foolish one. It is based on the fiscal illusion that the politicians in Washington magically have some multitrillion-dollar stash of money that it can pass out to businesses, mayors and governors. But this is an obvious fiction. The federal government doesn't produce anything, which is why it is called "the swamp." Congress and the White House can only "give" money to states by taking it from states and their people in the first place. Any money from the federal government is a redistribution of income from taxpayers in some states to governments in other states. For every state that is a winner, there is, necessarily, a state that is a loser.
Just the depth and scope of the complete lack of any awareness by the author throughout this article is truly breathtaking. I literally don't even know what to think after not reading it in full, because the stupidity is fucking overwhelming.

Parts like this are my favorite -

One example: California spends roughly twice as much per mile on road construction than Tennessee. Why?
Why indeed! The author, supposedly a journalist who is supposed to track down answers to these types of questions, seems mystified by this!

When 30 seconds of casual searching on the internet is turning up studies addressing the level of urban density between states, the topography of states, and a huge host of other factors that come into play when looking at how much roads cost per-mile in each state.

But hey, I'm not a journalist so what the hell do I know?

    Here is an interesting excerpt.

COVID-19 infected as many as 171 people in Florida as long as two months before officials announced it had come to the state, a Palm Beach Post analysis of state records shows.

Patients reported symptoms of the deadly virus as early as Jan. 1 when the disease was thought to be limited to China, Department of Health records reveal.
A 4-year-old Duval County girl started feeling symptoms or had her first positive test on Jan. 1. The state did not officially record her case until April 8.
This means she actually GOT the virus in late December. And who knows where she got the virus in the first place.

As Skroe has been saying for a long time. Trump is a symptom of a larger problem in America. Our anti-intellectual stances and complete disregard for anyone other than ourselves has led us to this. We're no longer a country that can simply disagree with each other. We're one that is swinging dangerously close to promoting a dictatorship simply because it makes a large portion of our populace mad.

They're on their way to being relegated to a sad page in the history books. But what we need to do is get them out of power, and keep them out. No more of this "what's the worst that can happen?" or "I'm sure it doesn't really matter..." politically ambivalent bullshit.

Donald Trump's presidency is exactly why choices matter.

The only things that are even a bit good about any of this is that, being in charge, the things they do actually hurt regular people quite a bit in a way that they can not avoid blame for. And these are starting to be noticed.

The idea that the virus is nothing to worry about so start opening up your businesses and EVERYONE GO OUT AND SHOP seems very very tone deaf. Trump supporters will be the ones hurt the most by this.

The recent bail outs for Wall Street not Main Street - this is starting to become a meme even for republicans. And the republicans shutting down any future bail outs now that it is time for the Main Street bail outs is also being noticed.

The armed protestors in Michigan is an optic that backfired by a lot. Nothing says racism is still a problem in this country more than well armed white guys occupying a state capitol knowing that if they were black they would be dead.

Trump talks about the desirabilility of tracking down just exactly where this virus started from. This is meant to embarrass China, but apparently Florida also has a few skeletons in its closet as well. There are likely other skeletons lurking in the background, and it may turn out that there are MANY states falsifying records of virus cases and deaths. Details about the Trump administration outbidding states for medical supplies would also embarrass the US. There are likely to be stories we don't even know about lurking about that could come to the surface. For the most part Trump is getting away with a lot of very corrupt and crazy things. People are taking notice since his corruption is starting to kill people, shut down businesses, and embarrass America.

It was not long ago the democrats blew Sanders and his idea of Medicare for All out of the water. The chose instead someone who has promised to veto Medicare for All if it passes Congress. Now multiple billionaires have come forward saying that we need to get some aid to middle and working class people. One proposal was basically a variation of UBI by expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit. He specifically said that we need to find a way to assure that a family with *one* wage earner could support a family of 4 and own their own home. The problems with having so many people broke have never been more apparent. The problems with having so many people uninsured or under insured have never been more apparent. America's commitment to austerity as an economic ideal may be coming to an end.

Out of the ashes rises the pheonix. Hopefully there won't be too many ashes.
