For those interested in Internet History, compare and contrast the aftermath of the fall of Myspace versus the fall of Tumblr. The former happened, as said, during an internet environment where startups were more viable and the field wasn't choked by megagiants - when Tumblr died, sure Twitter caught some of the traffic but for the most part a lot of that community just up and died.

Part of the reason is the fig leaf on a lot of these internet services has been pulled off vis a vis investors starting to realise that a free service can't be monetized exponentially. Well, it can, but the numbers are going to be fake as shit. (Woop, I just described most of the stock market. *sips tea*)

I admit I may be ignorant about the subject, but is Twitter even allowed to take down Trump's Tweets? Aren't they protected because of his office--isn't that the reason him deleting his own Tweets is technically illegal?

I could have sworn I read somewhere that his Tweeting was now considered "policy" and therefore must be kept intact and archived or something along those lines, but honestly there's been so much bullshit coming out of this administration it's hard to keep track.

No, actually it's Trump who isn't allowed to take down his tweets. Everything the President writes is automatically a piece of the official national record. Deleting them is basically destruction of federal property.

So Twitter wouldn't actually get in any legal trouble for taking his shit down, then? I thought that his not being allowed to delete them also extended to other people/entities doing so in his stead.

Granted, he seems to be entering an "experimenting with various drugs" phase, so maybe he'll do us all a favor and take himself out soon enough.
