Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expects to back a coronavirus relief deal when Democrats and the Trump administration reach one, even if he opposes pieces of it, the Kentucky Republican said Tuesday.

“Wherever this thing settles between the president of the United States and his team, that have to sign it into law, and the Democrat not insignificant minority in the Senate and majority in the House, is something I’m prepared to support even if I have some problems with certain parts of it,” he told reporters after the weekly Senate Republican policy lunch, which White House negotiators Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and chief of staff Mark Meadows attended.
I read that more as Mitch running for cover and trying to deflect blame away from Senate Republicans. If the House and Senate were to reach a deal with a big enough majority Trump doesn't fucking matter.

If Country A had 1,000 cases and 1 death, and Country B had 100 cases and 1 death, Country B should still be much worse.

JH even tracks this stat, calling it mortality ratio. It's a valid stat to have, and the US is doing better than many but not quite as good as health-care powerhouses like Chile, Malawi and Honduras.

    HOWEVER.

Trump is still cherry picking in an attempt to defend his actions, which is fat fucking stupid because in the same interview he said it was the governors' job. The US is doing poorly in all metrics except mortality ratio and even in that stat it's not that impressive, just not as morbidly obese as the other stats.
The problem with this stat is that it's directly correlated to high testing and the discovery of non-serious cases. We are doing lots of tests now, so a lot of cases which otherwise wouldn't interact with the health care system are suddenly counted as a "case" that dilutes the "%death per case" statistic. Meanwhile, Europe simply shut everything down to shut down the spread of cases, non-serious and serious, so their %death per case is higher because the only cases they interacted with were cases that required the attention of a doctor.

That's why %hospitalization/%death per population is a far more relevant, and more importantly, stable statistic.

hopefully the US will learn from this insanity and take measures to ensure that future presidents can't abuse the power of the office so badly without any repercussions. otherwise just imagine what would happen if somebody just as vile took the office but actually had enough of a brain to take full advantage of it

I dunno, I put the US's chance of even recovering from the past few years and staying a nation at 50/50 right now. The chance of a completely new admistration fixing things and putting safeguards in place will be some fraction of 50%.

we never will. every US president since JFK regardless of party (except maybe Carter) had a hand in making the executive branch more powerful and immune to oversight. the Dem's choosing to once again go with the conservatie option rather than the progerssive one shows this country is fucked.

Such measures would need to be very firmly embedded and protected to stop them from simply being ignored, so your likely looking at Constitutional amendments, GL passing any of those in the currently political climate.

As for the US learning, I wouldn't count on it. Even now Trump still has 90+% job approval among Republicans.

Indeed. After 3 and a half years of idiocy, everyone with a functioning brain already knows he's a moron. Anyone who HASN'T seen it yet never will.

So Trump was just asked at the press briefing why mail-in voting is fine in Florida, but not in other states. This might not be the exact quote, but he started off by saying, "Because Florida has a Republican governor."

Then he went on to say how it also had another Republican governor before the current governor, and how they've done a great job of making sure mail-in voting would work well there.
“Leadership: Whatever happens, you’re responsible. If it doesn’t happen, you’re responsible.” -- Donald J. Trump, 2013

"I don't take responsibility at all."

I actually can KIND of see the difference he's trying to make. With Nevada sending out ballots to everyone who is registered, you have to wonder, how up to date are their register lists? Are there dead people on there? People that have moved? etc And now you are looking at a TON more mail in ballots that have to be processed than normal, so are they hiring extra people to actually compare all those signatures? Last I read, these people aren't even actually trained signature experts.

Seems to me I read another state did something similar, but instead of ballots, they send ballot requests out to everyone registered. Then those people return those, and then they'll get an actual ballot. Seems a little more secure that way, but I suppose there might not be enough time to do that now.

Remember, Trump routinely accuses others of behavior he himself engages in. He can accuse Biden of living in a basement, but only Trump voluntarily went bunker inspecting during a peaceful protest.

Most intelligent people will have a tendency to cringe or turn off something like that. I think its an urge we should try to resist because its important that as many people as possible face the truth and the consequences of that truth in its entirety. And that truth is that Donald Trump is an utterly incompetent moron, wholly unfit for the office he occupies, and that he must be removed from that office in the coming election at all costs because if he isn't, many more innocent people will die.

So don't cringe, but accept that the president is a retard and make damn sure he loses the next election.

54,504 new cases, around 11k fewer than last Tuesday but there's no way Florida's numbers are accurate given that they closed many testing centers a couple days ago for the oncoming storm and there's bound to be a huge backlog. Oh, also they're fucking liars. Fuck Florida.

Texas: 11,210 new cases; 205 deaths
Florida: 5,446 new cases; 245 deaths
California: 5,156 new cases; 197 deaths (new record)
Georgia: 2,513 new cases; 79 deaths
North Carolina: 2,117 new cases; 26 deaths
Louisiana: 1,873 new cases; 24 deaths
Tennessee: 1,805 new cases; 25 deaths
Illinois: 1,471 new cases; 19 deaths
Missouri: 1,352 new cases; 22 deaths
South Carolina: 1,239 new cases; 54 deaths
Virginia: 1,145 new cases; 26 deaths
Ohio: 1,129 new cases; 31 deaths
Mississippi: 1,074 new cases; 42 deaths
Alabama: 1,041 new cases; 33 deaths
Arizona: 1,008 new cases; 66 deaths

Not very significant changes from the trends of the previous week so far. Texas' new cases seems high but it's actually about the same as the previous Tuesday which includes corrections from the weekend. They're also still dealing with bookkeeping issues, from what I can tell. Louisiana is up to its ears in a backlog:

Louisiana: "On 8/4/2020 LDH reports a total of 3,614 cases reported to the state since 8/3/20. This includes a backlog of 1,741 cases with specimen collection dates as far back as 5/28" Worldometer has redistributed the backlog historically.
I wonder how much good it does people to know that a specimen taken back in fucking MAY is just now being tested and recorded.

Deaths are up slightly from last Tuesday at 1,362 putting the total at 160,290. I believe we still have quite a few 1k+ days ahead of us but hopefully they'll start tapering off within a couple weeks. Texas still seems to be wrestling with discrepancies between the county and state level and I'm not sure when or if that'll be rectified. I believe worldometers is taking the info from the county level which is the lower of the two (the counties are claiming that the state is overcounting).

    Stay safe, folks.
