While I'm certainly not a judge, military personnel or other high-position government type that Trump has pressured/disgusted out of office, so I don't know the nature of the pressure they're facing... I do wish these people would stay in their positions.

Leaving doesn't really show "grace and tact in taking the high road," because Trump and his ilk have no respect for such things... all it really does is leave a position open for Trump to pack with one of his goons.

Trump said the US has rounded the corner on COVID-19, in an effort to test how many versions of the same lie he can tell before it becomes true.

Fauci of course disagrees. And at this point, anyone would have less credibility than Trump, but Fauci is still the expert.

Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he disagrees with Trump's assessment, noting that if Americans aren't careful, the pandemic could worsen.

"I have to disagree with that, because if you look at ... the statistics, they are disturbing. We're plateauing at around 40,000 cases a day. And the deaths are around a thousand," Fauci told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell.

Anthony Fauci on Friday said he disagrees with President Trump that the country has rounded "the final turn" on the COVID-19 pandemic, and warned Americans not to get complacent heading into the fall.

Fauci, the federal government's leading infectious disease expert, was responding to comments made by Trump during a press conference on Thursday, where he defended his comments made to Bob Woodward about deliberately downplaying the severity of the pandemic.

Trump said the U.S. was "rounding the final turn. And we're going to have vaccines very soon, maybe much sooner than you think."

Fauci said he hopes there is not a post-Labor Day surge of cases like there was following Memorial Day and July 4th, because the country's infection rate is already too high.

"When you have a baseline of infections that are 40,000 a day and you have threats of increased test positivity in certain regions ... what we don't want to see is going into the fall season, you don't want to start off already with a baseline that's so high," Fauci said.

When asked about the largely maskless crowd at Trump's outdoor rally in Michigan on Thursday night, Fauci noted that just because an event is outside doesn't make it safe.

"If you're outdoors and you're crowded together and you don't have a mask, the chances of respiratory transmission of a virus clearly are there," Fauci said. "Just because you're outdoors doesn't mean you're protected, particularly if you're in a crowd and you're not wearing masks."

Fauci, who previously said he doesn't think Trump was trying to distort the reality of the pandemic, admitted that there have been "disagreements" between himself and the White House about messaging.

"Certainly there were disagreements. There were times I was out there telling the American public how difficult this is, how we're having a really serious problem, and the president was saying it's something that's going to disappear, which obviously is not the case," Fauci said.

Fauci added that there continue to be "some disagreements in what we say and what comes out from the White House," but said they're trying to get the right word out.

Fauci said he couldn't comment specifically on what Trump said to Woodward "except to say yes, when you downplay something that is really a threat, that's not a good thing."
Related: McConnell, having made a half hearted quarter hearted five percent hearted I do plan to finish eventually lame-ass limp-dick IMPOTUS pitch that didn't even make it out of the Senate, has just shrugged his shoulders and given up entirely. Simply put, the Party of Trump continues to push for a "skinny bill" that offers minimal relief at best while cases, deaths, job losses and business closures contiue to mount. What the Democrats want might be too much, but what the Party of Trump offers is too little.

Unrelated: when the House when to DHS to subpoena the head, he responded "I don't exist."

So they subpoena'd the acting head. Simply put, he stopped giving the House information about credible threats -- specifically about Russia attacking the election again -- because it made Trump look bad. And Trump's ego is not sufficient reason to ignore a national security threat.

As I mentioned before, I'm just going to keep it simple until next week. We're heading into a weekend so the numbers will be skewed again soon anyway. I'll see if it's worth picking up the extended breakdown after the numbers from Tuesday/Wednesday are posted.

There were 46.6k new cases posted and 1,094 deaths (more than the previous Friday by a few dozen, FWIW), putting the national total at 197,421. Wisconsin had another day of high new case numbers so maybe their record high yesterday wasn't a complete fluke. New York just narrowly avoided hitting 1k again and Arkansas did set a new record at 1,107 (to be taken with a grain of salt given they reported very little the previous few days). Fuck Florida nearly had a third day in a row of 200+ deaths. I still haven't heard anything about where that 378 from yesterday went--maybe they decided to spread it out over a period of time to make it look less nightmarish.

Trump continues sending mixed messages to his braindead followers. After telling them on Twitter that masks are badass and everyone should wear them (after being prodded to do so for months), he's mocking masks at his rallies. Rallies packed with maskless supporters crammed together. Hope none of you have to come in contact with anyone from those super spreader events.

    Stay safe, folks.

In the latter case it would mean everything, troops, assets, civilians, diplomats etc.

Because if there is no deal with the Taliban and the Afghan government doesn't have the means to not fall apart within a day, the withdrawal would make the Fall of Saigon+The Yugoslav Ethnic cleansing look like a walk in the park.

There's the question of what will happen with all the Afghan Army gear? All the stuff the US can't necessarily just load onto a jet a fly out, what happens to the civilians?

Not to mention the fucking horrible optics of US forces turning their backs as the Taliban would start revenge killing schoolgirls down the street.

There's also the question of how would Pakistan react to the ensuing chaos?

I think the main point of the negotiations is to delay the inevitable chaos as long as possible and to mitigate the fallout as much as possible.

Pretending the Taliban won't be the real rulers of Afghanistan sooner or later really gets us nowhere. By talking to them perhaps, just perhaps, some of the fallout can be reduced.

Nothing. But Trump can no longer accuse Democrats of delaying the vaccine, when he is delaying the vaccine. Just because it's the right thing to do doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite.
Unfortunately Trump doesn't give a damn if the results doesn't fit his message.

Trump could slap a 'cHiNa Vaccine' label on a bottle of Bleach and will bitch about Democrats asking why the upside down peel off the real label says Bleach with warning on it saying "If you injest you will die".

    (Oh wait)

It's all political with Trump, he doesn't care if it kills his base and only his base in the process. As long as something he endorses gets pushed out before the elections he will claim victory while bitching about how the evil Democrats are asking why only his base are dying to the vaccine.

Edit: What ever happened to the vaccine that Putin was pushed to phase 3 again because you know Trump was taking notes and eating them.

Even if Trump loses, we're going to need much more than regulations on companies.

Misinformation and Trump-like demagogues are merely symptoms of the underlying rot in American society. Neither would exist if there wasn't a demand for it.

Well, "200k" is the first reply I see to that tweet. So there is some justice in the world, at least.

Since Trump was always more of a game show guy than anything else, think we can convince him to do something for ratings to commemorate the upcoming occasion? 200,000th person to die gets a free hat? Or maybe a T-shirt that says "When I said I'd rather die than vote for Hilary, I meant it."

Seriously speaking though... I'm actually curious. In American history, what is the highest amount of deaths that can be attributed to the actions/inactions of a single person? Does Trump have it beat yet?

Jefferson Davis led the Confederacy to war against the rest of his fellow Americans, leading to the deaths of 600,000 Ameicans -- about 2% of the US population at the time.

The Trump Death Clock, found here, cites experts that say Trump is responsible for 60% of the deaths because of his failure to act in a timely fashion (he claims he did, but the timeline and the evidence say otherwise). At time of writing, the Trump Death Clock's toll is 115, 247, an effective tie in Amercan deaths with World War I.

Little ol’ me is trying to get “Trump lied, 200000 died” to catch on... It works a lot better when juxtaposed with Benghazi...

It's an interesting position to take. In direct contradiction to all available facts, of course. But I suspect you're one of those people for whom feelings are much more important than facts. You feel like the left are responsible for the violence, so you'll ignore the fact that right wing murders out-weigh left wing murders by a significant margin.

You could easily google proof of this, but you won't. Because those facts would damage that comfortable little fact free safe space you've made for yourself, and you wouldn't be able to bear that.
