Many Trump supporters actively dislike pollsters and would get a thrill out of misleading them. Biden beat out Bernie because of very specific demographic groups largely voting for him - groups that would vote for any Democratic candidate versus Trump regardless. Bernie beat out Biden in terms of getting out demographics that didn't normally vote, AKA the youth. Yes, not enough to turn the tide, but, I believe, enough to have a made a difference in the general.
Biden is a walking corpse. That's an inescapable perception that many people have, including people on the left such as myself. If you put Biden up against Trump in a debate, Trump will demolish him. If Biden doesn't debate Trump, then he looks like a coward, which is very important to the demographic in the middle that might vote either way. So, we know the debates are going to boost Trump. We know the economy is recovering and we know that is going to boost Trump. We know the coronavirus pandemic is winding down and most states are re-opening, so that's going to boost Trump. The riots, cities burning, violent crowds in the street mobbing people sitting at restaurants having dinner - that's going to boost Trump too.
It's not going to be election fuckery. It's going to be Trump winning for the same reason he won in 2016 - a hidden demographic of people that don't want their voting preferences known for whatever reason. Or they're just not accounted for or spoken to by pollsters. It's going to be because the Democrats once again chose what's "safe" versus a man who is painting them (successfully, judging from my Facebook feed) as irredeemable communists regardless.
I really don't get the optimism I see online. Maybe it's because I'm from the south, whereas most people online are from big coastal cities, but I just see the same shit that happened in 2016 happening all over again. The only argument Democrats are bringing this election is "not being Trump" and I'm sorry, but that's just not a good message. It's not a good sell to people who don't watch CNN all day and talk at their water cooler about how the Cheeto-in-Chief is no better than Adolf. Messages of negativity never win an election. Trump didn't win in 2016 because he was a racist, he won because he was promising "America First" and putting people back to work and giving people their dignity back. Where's that positive message from the Democrats? Where's the promises of change and sweeping social reform and the idea of making things better?
