Presumably the trees close up are on the memorial grounds and probably do get raked. The rest of the countryside is mostly farmland. And it was fairly early in the spring so the leaves hadn't fully come in yet.

But it has more to do with the sudden expansion of water in their system freezing when temperatures rapidly drop below freezing and less to do with forest fires.

Again, Trump (or Savino, more likely) is using nebulous threats about Iran to look tough. And I am sure our resident Trumpsters all got boners for it, and posted a dozen bald eagle memes on reddit in response. And yes, if Iran does attack us, of course I support a strong response, but lets look at the clusterfuck this post actually is.

1) "According to press reports". Wait a minute... why the fuck is the President getting intel reports on potential Iranian attacks from the media? I could have sworn the government pays people to do pretty much exactly this. How many months has it been since this guy actually had an intel briefing?
2) Lets look at the last time Iran retailiated for the same thing. They shot 22 ballistic missiles (Giant things the size of telephone poles, not those little rockets) at US bases. 110 US Service members were injured enough to get medical treatment. Donald Trump did absolutely nothing. He dismissed the attack as "Headaches", and didn't even really acknowledge that a nation launched an overt military attack on US Troops. This isn't Russian bounties, this is the Iranian military shooting actual Iranian made weapons at actual uniformed US Troops. And he did nothing.

Any resident Trump supports want to weigh in on how tough Trump is again? Any of you confused about the difference between being tough on Twitter, and tough in reality?

I'm not going to defend incompetence, but unless a warship is flying colours, most civilians would be hard-pressed to tell a US ship from a Russian, German, Chinese, British or any other modern Navy one. It's not like the nation is written on the seabord in giant letters. You need to have an active interest in these kinds of things to know that the US doesn't have Battlecruisers, that Battleships are no longer a thing, or that this is a Russian ship. The guy probably just typed in 'menacing US ship' and got a picture of a Kirov class.

It even is flying colors on the photo. But I guess, most are unfamiliar, what the russian navy ensign actually looks like. I would be suprised if most would know the soviet ensign, not to mention those of the Russian Empire, and the Russian Federation. But then, I also have the opinion, if they love their military as much as they pretend to do, they should know at least something about it.
And even if you know nothing about specific ships, you certainly should know, that a blue St. Andrew cross on a white field is not the ensign of the US navy.

Honestly in actual wartime situation of near peers I am not sure how survivable any naval ship is any more. I kind of suspect in a major conflict we find that carriers are basically sitting ducks and its just to easy to swamp them from stand off range with missile strikes to the point they can't survive near enough a hostile target to deploy their fighters effectively. We mostly use them against non peers as mobile airbases which has been useful for the conflicts we have been doing.

This is offtopic, but this has been talked over way too many times and in short it is bullshit. Why? One of the simplest reasons is targetting the carrier in the first place. Good luck finding it's position over the horizon. Only movies have precise locations on some "radar" display. You need active targeting - while there are carrier based AWACS in the air and the fighter airwings are coming to greet you. Even nukes are kinda crappy, you need a very close hit (and I mean 1-2 miles close) to disable any big ship. Said ship is constantly moving and needs to be tracked nonstop, otherwise you might as well start nuking moon.

If carriers would be obsolete, USA would not build them, China would not have started their own massive program to get a carrier fleet up and Russia would have stopped dreaming at finally replacing Kuznetsov with something actually usable.

Best I can find is a blog trying to argue that because they're used to gather up debris following a clearcut it's somehow proof that Finland "rakes" their forests.

Ignoring that they actually do controlled burns, which are trickier in the US due to federal laws and regulations, which are actually the best method to manage forests to limit fire risk while promoting biodiversity necessary to a healthy forest.

Again, if you have less rain due to climate change that makes the forest susceptible to greater forest fires. You cannot say go 50 miles into a forest with equipment and rake leaves and tinder. That would take massive amounts of manpower. Oh so you want to spend tens of million, likely more into the 100's to rake forest? Okay let's do it!
