Okay, so, I'm going to assume @Benggaul isn't coming in today either so...here goes.

The United States lost 868 people to COVID-19 today, bringing the total to 213,524
The top ten states, in order:
1) Florida, adding 2,658+2 cases and 111 new deaths. Fuck Florida. DeSantis opened up bars, restaurants, and beaches and now leads the country in deaths.
2) Texas, 94 deaths.
3) California, 86 deaths.
4) Ohio, 79 deaths.
5) Illinois, 62 deaths.
6) Georgia, 43 deaths.
7) Missouri and NC, tied with 29 deaths.
9) Louisiana, 26 deaths.
10) Sadly, my state of New York is on the top ten list with 20 deaths. The state govt talks about "hotspots" which is a nice way of saying "pockets of people caused by one idiot".

But you know I don't do simple. Here are the top ten deaths-per-capita:
1) North Dakota has the highest deaths per (million) people, well ahead of everyone else even though they had 89 new deaths.
2) Kansas just barely beats out
3) Ohio and Mississippi.
5) Delaware had a hard day, with six deaths putting them high on the proportional list.
6) Louisiana
7) Fuck Florida.
8) Missouri
9) Utah and Montana

Florida, Louisiana and Ohio were on both lists -- these states are not doing well at all. I guess Ohio's doing the worst.

The seven-day-average case count in the US has been slowly increasing since Sept 12. Deaths are on a slight decline, but follow deaths, so don't get too used to that.

Ehh, I think that's a rather rosy characterisation of Biden's performance. Not that I think Biden can't debate, but from what I've seen the merit in Biden's performance is that for the most part he managed not to be phased by all the shit thrown at him from Trump's direction.

No, it is entirely ACCURATE on how Biden destroyed Trump. Every poll showed Biden dominated him, unless you are looking at fucking ignorant Twitter polls.

I was going to say the same for Biden. Constant stammering, fumbling with his words, etc... Trump pretty well destroyed him out the gate, but at least Biden woke up half way through and started getting engaged. It's reassuring that people looked favorably on Biden's performance (given overall, in my opinion, he has a more agreeable outlook), but judging Biden to have "beat the shit out of Trump" is going to require extensive mental gymnastics.

I took the interpretation more as "Biden's overall platform and policies are better, therefore his debating skills [magically] were better". In terms of administration and policy, yeah, sure Biden has the advantage because he's at least somewhat competent and (mostly) awake. It takes a lot of imagination to think the debate itself was masterfully won by Biden.

Then you are fucking delusional. Even Trump's own people don't think he won, which is why they have spent the last three days making excuses, and trying to head off the condemnation.

Trump was so agitated, he couldn't even let Biden finish a sentence.

I was wondering about both the number of votes and at some point a quorum if enough GOP Senators are out and the Democrats boycott (you need 51 to do anything in the Senate).

I don't think the Judiciary Committee's recommendation is actually required for a Supreme Court Justice nomination to proceed. As far as the whole Senate vote goes, they only need a tie, as the tie-breaking vote would go to Pence. As long as Murkowski and Collins still vote against confirmation, and with two Senators not voting, it'll still be 49-49, which would let Pence break the tie. At least one more GoP Senator would need to be out of the vote to potentially block a nomination, and that's only if Murkowski and Collins stand by their word and the sick Senators don't find a way to vote.

Yeah tons of people seem to be have been testing positive today from an event from the rose garden with the new supreme court nominee that happened several days ago. a bunch of reporters, kellyanne, 2 senators, all were at the same event.

On Jan 21st, Pence is sworn in as VP, and immediately elevated to office of the President as the seat is currently vacant because no one got 270 electoral votes.

If no one gets 270 electoral votes, the House of Representatives would vote to fill the office. This scenario would only occur if Trump dies after January 6th, when the Electoral College votes.

Unfortunately, as far as I understand, Pence would be President no matter what.

Only if Trump dies after the Electoral College votes. If Trump dies before, that's a possibility but not a foregone conclusion. For instance, the GOP might (though probably wouldn't) direct their electors to vote Pence for VP and someone else for President. Whether that directive would be considered legally binding, though (like pledged electors are in most states), is another matter entirely.

I'm not talking about the particular vote, I'm talking about the Senate having a quorum to do anything. If two Senator's are out, that's 51 GOP. One more and there are 50 GOP. If the entire Democratic caucus boycotts the Senate (and they could do so by just "focusing on their districts this close to the election") then McConnell can't do anything, because they won't have a quorum.

And before anyone says it, of course the Lame Ducks session might be an option (assuming Biden wins and the Senate flips), but if McTrump moves forward with the confirmation process during that narrow window, the Democrats are pretty much guaranteed to expand the count.
