Because it's a penalty for being convicted on the articles of impeachment and removed from office, which the Republicans in the Senate refused to do.

Because the Senate never voted to remove him from office and did a second vote to disallow him from ever holding office. Impeachment is a multi part and vote process. The Articles of Impeachment start in the house and get voted on. That is basically a vote on the evidence that was found and documented in said Articles. If it passes, said Articles then go sent to the Senate to be voted on there. There are 2 votes in the Senate. One for removal(basically you've been fired and requires 2/3 of the sitting chamber) and one for disqualification to ever hold office(this one requires a simple majority and has to be taken up after the first vote). Note on the disqualification, that isn't automatic and someone has to put it forth in the Senate to be voted on.

Yeah people need to stop implying this. If impeachment disqualified you from running for office, Trump would already not be eligible. Impeachment AND conviction can lead to being disqualified for running for office.

There are a few parts to impeachment.
House impeachment proceedings. If yes they are impeached and it goes to the Senate, if no then nothing.
Senate votes to remove the impeached person. If no then nothing happens except they are impeached, if yes they are removed and a second vote is held.
Second Senate vote: If no nothing additional happens and they are still impeached and removed from office, if yes they are unable to run for office and lose some if not all of their x-pres benefits.

It CAN be a penalty. They vote to remove from office and if that's successful they then vote whether or not the person can hold office again.

I was wondering the same when I saw the capitol pictures. What exactly did they think would happen lol. Congress was just there to look at the results and say yeah so there's that congrats Biden. But some rednecks storm the Capitol and congress... what... says "well now you're here Trump remains president" the end? My sides hurt laughing.

You know, I'm looking from Germany and wonder for the last 4 years how any other government could even do business with the USA seeing how her president lies when he opens his mouth. I thought yeah well there'll be another and maybe we'll get more stable relationships.

Now that the president has incited violent sedition/insurrection or whatever the correct term is and will not get removed from office? Why the fuck would any other country believe anything your congress says? If the president can do whatever he wants without checks and balances then why even trust Biden.

That's the difference though. Impeachment itself doesn't do shit aside from leave an asterisk next to the name. It's the conviction from the Senate that's needed to do anything, which was never done last time because "he was doing what was best for the country!" (fucking l o l)

It has to go through impeachment to get to the conviction. One step at a time.

Trump being the first president to be impeached twice seems mighty fine to me, even if it is just an "asterisk." Because as the decades roll on it'll be an important footnote in the history books to communicate just how terrible he was. And neither of his impeachments will be for something as unimportant as "lied about getting a blowjob"
