I kind of have my doubts if Trump could have achieved the record number of voter turnout if his voters didn't feel that they had to double down on stupidity.

Yet another lesson in Republican hypocrisy.

We request that you instruct the appropriate Democrat committee chairs to immediately join Republican calls to hold the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable for its role in causing the global COVID-19 pandemic
This is from a letter the House GOP sent Pelosi, asking for a House investigation into the origin of COVID. You will notice several things:
    1) They've already decided China is at fault. I don't see what an investigation would do for the Party of Trump, when the Party of Trump has already made up its mind.
    2) The letter also "cites"

There is mounting evidence the pandemic started in a Chinese lab, and the CCP covered it up. If that is the case, the CCP is responsible for the deaths of almost 600,000 Americans and millions more worldwide.
That's grand-scale deflection, of course. The disease could be natural in origin or made by the Umbrella Corp. Trump still failed to protect his people.
    3) And also, if there's "mounting evidence" again why have an investigation? There is a WH investigation, apparently it started under Trump, but it's incomplete. I don't know what "mounting evidence" the Party of Trump thinks it has, but there's nothing public. The House GOP sure thinks they have it. From their perspective, what else do they need?

    My favorite:

    4) This interview with Trump from Jan 22 of course.

Trump told CNBC he believes that Chinese President Xi Jinping and health officials there are going to continue to tell authorities around the world everything they need to know about the virus.

“I do. I do. I have a great relationship with President Xi,” said Trump, addressing a question about whether he’s concerned about transparency in China. “The relationship is very good.”
If the virus was man-made in a lab, well, sounds like Trump was a fool to trust Xi. Where is the Republican Party calling out Trump for trusting Xi? After all, they seem pretty sure it was a man-made virus the CCP covered up. That sounds like the opposite of what Trump said. If the Republican Party does not condemn Trump for trusting Xi, then this demand is disingenuous.

"Oh, but Trump could have trusted Xi at the time and then changed his mind later."

I mean, they're free to say that. "Trump trusted Xi and he betrayed us", the Party of Trump could say. "How dare Xi betray the trust Trump put in him for months and months while doing nearly nothing?" Kind of defeats the purpose, but if that's their story, they should stick with it. "Trump was right to trust Xi for as long as he did, and then right to stop trusting Xi the very second he changed his mind" is going to be tough to justify. I see no Party of Trump statements of either of these.

But this is the main part I wanted to point out:

    5) The GOP are still fighting a House investigation into the Jan 6th attack.

Sorry, but you can't be upset about one to the point of demanding an investigation, but so anti-upset about the other to the point of blocking it, and still pretend to care about this country. Unless, of course, you admit you're part of the problem and trying to cover it up -- and that's the hypocrisy.

    Thursday's report:

24,393 new cases; more than 6k fewer than last Thursday.

    Top 6:

    Fuck Florida.
Texas: 1,831 new cases; 51 deaths
California: 1,540 new cases; 48 deaths
Washington: 1,495 new cases; 18 deaths
New York: 1,302 new cases; 20 deaths
Pennsylvania: 1,227 new cases; 39 deaths

We've now had a full week (Thursday to Thursday) of sub-30k numbers which is about where we were this time last year. Florida appears to be determined to keep its spot up top for as many days as possible, occasionally losing out to Texas. You know...the two states doing the most bragging about how "great" their numbers and COVID response are? Fuck 'em both. Puerto Rico has a better vaccination rate and better positivity rate than either of them, so how about we kick them out and bring PR in?

630 deaths is about 70 fewer than last Thursday and brings the total to 607,726. "You know who" is on top of the list again. Not much has changed this week apart from the continued slight decline in deaths as time goes on.

COVID-19 cases spiking again at some ICE detention centers. Critics say ICE failed to vaccinate detainees.--I won't let Biden off the hook for this since it's happening under his watch, but ICE was emboldened by the Trump administration to be a pack of bigoted, irresponsible assholes and it shows no sign of improvement. Abolish ICE.

    Stay safe, folks.

So 2 idiots at Yankee stadium decided to drop a banner that read "Trump Won. Save America" in the middle of the game. The fans in the stands booed and flipped off the banner until it was confiscated by security where they then proceeded to cheer. The idiots who deployed the rag were detained then escorted out of the stadium where they'll probably wind up on Fox News crying about their freedom of speech.

    Friday's report:

22,813 new cases; over 6k fewer than last Friday.

    Top 5:

    Fuck Florida.
California: 1,430 new cases; 60 deaths
Texas: 1,423 new cases; 57 deaths
New York: 1,149 new cases; 26 deaths
Washington: 1,061 new cases; 14 deaths

Even fewer states went over 1k this week than last, and of those listed today the last four are separated by less than 400 cases. There's light at the end of the tunnel and it's up to all of us to make sure it's not an oncoming train. Positivity is under the 5% threshold for all but 5 states (South Dakota is still sitting at nearly 7%) and vaccination rates continue to climb with several states reaching the 70% goal (you can guess which ones are still in the 30-40% range). If things continue at this pace we should be in a much better place by the end of this Summer than we were last Summer. It remains to be seen if we'll reach the 70% by July 4th goal that Biden was shooting for thanks to the "reluctance" of a certain subset of the population to get their jabs, but I'm starting to feel better about things.

627 deaths is slightly fewer than last Friday and brings the total to 608,961. Florida wasn't the worst today for once, but less than 20 deaths separate California in the top spot from Florida in fourth so it's not much of a change. The 7-day average is still above 500, but it continues steadily, if slowly, declining.

Its shitty and wrong when Biden says stuff like that.

Now you admit that Trump talking about wanting to fuck his own daughter, watching teen girls undress, and grabbing women by the pussy is shitty and wrong. Also which comments do you find worse?

Hoo boy. This is an interesting one.

So the ACLU is suing Trump and a whole slew of others because Trump ordered protestors cleared from Arlington. You know the deal: rubber bullets, tear gas, Bible upside-down, etc etc fatass.

Biden's DOJ is asking for the lawsuit to be thrown out.

    "WHAT?"

And, well, it kind of makes sense. For one, the DoJ says that Trump can't do it again so it's like the election lawsuits that were thrown out because the states certified. So a lawsuit that says "Trump can't do that" is moot.

    "...okay but..."

And two, they argue that Trump and other WH officials may have ordered the actions, but the police were the ones who did them. And I guess, technically, Trump was not actually in charge of the DC police. It would be similar to the SS shooting at someone to protect Biden, missing, and hitting a bystander. You couldn't sue Biden for that.

In essence, Biden could be making these arguments in case he, oh I don't know, needs to clear a murderous insurrection. If a second group of treasonous killers try to rush the Capitol or WH to end the lives of duly elected officials, Biden could say "Well, tear gas and rubber bullets worked last time", order the DC police to open fire with impunity, then say "Look, we have President, it was fine when your guy did it".

"But...Trump used damn near lethal force for a photo-op! Any hypothetical Biden might not even need to do isn't relevant!"

Well it's possible the judge won't agree to the DoJ's motion and allow the ACLU's lawsuit against Trump to continue. There are also three other lawsuits about the same issue brought by others, such as BLM. I might be mis-reading this, but I think the DOJ is only arguing one of those four lawsuits now.

"This sends a pretty ugly message."

I agree. The ACLU even said law enforcement "could have used live ammunition to clear the park, and nobody would have a claim" based on the DoJ's argument.

In case I wasn't clear in my posts at the time which...hold on.

Yes, the DC police did it and they didn't technically have to. Maybe if Trump had used the SS then Biden wouldn't be defending him. We'll never know. But Trump gave the order. He was a dictator, he was a sociopath, and most importantly, he was a craven whore-fucking coward.

    June 2, 2016:

    Paul Ryan endorses Donald Trump

I feel .confident he would help us turn the ideas in this agenda into laws to help improve people’s lives. That’s why I’ll be voting for him this fall.

It’s no secret that he and I have our differences. I won’t pretend otherwise. And when I feel the need to, I’ll continue to speak my mind. But the reality is, on the issues that make up our agenda, we have more common ground than disagreement.
    -- Paul Ryan

So great to have the endorsement and support of Paul Ryan. We will both be working very hard to Make America Great Again!
-- Donald Trump by tweet (remember, he used to be able to do that)

    Almost exactly five years later:

Paul Ryan urges GOP to shake Trump obsession, focus on 'principles,' not 'personality'

"Once again, we conservatives find ourselves at a crossroads," Ryan, R-Wis., said in an outdoor speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., which often hosts GOP officials, presidential candidates and conservative luminaries.

"And here's one reality we have to face: If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality or on second-rate imitations, then we're not going anywhere," he said. "Voters looking for Republican leaders want to see independence and mettle."

He said it was "horrifying" to see a presidency come to a "dishonorable and disgraceful end," referring to rump's re-election loss and his sputtering — and ultimately unsuccessful — legal battle. He did not mention Trump by name.
    "At least Trump couldn't tw--"

In a statement Friday morning, Trump called Ryan a "RINO," an acronym for Republican in name only, and a "curse" to the GOP.

"He has no clue as to what needs to be done for our country, was a weak and ineffective leader, and spends all of his time fighting Republicans as opposed to Democrats who are destroying our country, Trump said. "As a Republican, having Paul Ryan on your side almost guarantees a loss, for both you, the party, and America itself!"
Well, nothing about that first part aged well.

One, you'll notice Paul Ryan speaking his mind, um...didn't really seem to come up much, did it? And even now, with Trump out of office and possibly facing charges for the very things Ryan was talking about (Georgia), Ryan refused to condemn Trump by name. Was he clear? Yes, but he did not say "I condemn Trump's actions that attacked the election". That's still cowardice. Not as cowardly as, oh I dunno, hiding for five months then saying "lol Biden said something about girl" while Trump's emulators take one across state lines to pay them for sex, but still pretty cowardly.

Two, we see once again how in Trump's world, there is only loyalty to Trump. Trump took an attack against him and made it an attack against the Republican Party. I guess everyone here will have to decide if that's valid on their own. Is an attack on Trump an attack against the Republican Party?

Hey @TexasRules you seem pretty active. I even saw you when I went back to look at what posters said during Trump's use of nearly lethal force against unarmed protestors. Clearly an upstanding, genuine poster like yourself will take this opportunity. Is an attack on Donald Trump an attack on the Republican Party?

Biden's DoJ is doing a lot of things to protect Trump still. Not just on the case you mentioned here, but they are actively fighting a court ordered release of a memo pertaining Trump's obstruction of justice on the Mueller investigation.

Both Trump and the DoJ has successfully destroyed the DoJ's reputation and view as competent and apolitical. I place most of the blame on the DoJ with this who at anytime could have stopped it, and at anytime can stop this shit.

My understanding - and @cubby can probably correct me if I'm wrong - is that from the standpoint of legal ethics, DoJ lawyers are required to defend those they represent. They can't just say "yeah, that was totally fucked up what my client did, throw the book at them" any more than a public defender could say that about a murderer they're chosen to represent in court.

The distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss. Of all the things at risk, the loss of an objective reality is perhaps the most dangerous. The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil. When truth leaves us, when we let it slip away, when it is ripped form our hands, we become vulnerable to the appetite of whatever monster screams the loudest.
