Look behind you, Florida, Arkansas is taking a swing at "worst in the country". Sets record for infections, nears record for hospitalizations.
I got COVID last November after not going anywhere for months when I borrowed my sister's car when mine broke down. Had a (thankfully) minor case, and no severe after-effects. I think my one lingering issue, however, would be a fair karmic punishment for the people who refuse to take precautions against COVID.
It's far from life-threatening, but let's see them suffer with horrible parosmia for 6+ months; there's not much in the American diet that is edible when meat, onion, corn, and peanut butter tastes like death.
Trump's former campaign director, Brad Parscale made a hell of a recovery this year.
11 months he was discovered having fleeced millions from the Trump campaign.
8 months ago he was arrested in his drawers.
Now he's back to fleecing dumb GOP politicians.
Caitlyn Jenner’s campaign is now broke, with Brad Parscale walking away with the bulk of the cash. Listed among his expenses was an $1,800 dinner at Nobu, and $1,300 for limos. Jenner is currently polling at 3%.
If you're a sociopath with no morals. The GOP and it's constituents are a fucking gravy train.
NBC News reports on something interesting: 18 USC § 610.
"The hell is that?"
Trump called the acting AG and told him to declare the election corrupt. Also, he basically threatened to fire him if he didn't.It shall be unlawful for any person to intimidate, threaten, command, or coerce, or attempt to intimidate, threaten, command, or coerce, any employee of the Federal Government as defined in section 7322(1) of title 5, United States Code, to engage in, or not to engage in, any political activity, including, but not limited to, voting or refusing to vote for any candidate or measure in any election, making or refusing to make any political contribution, or working or refusing to work on behalf of any candidate. Any person who violates this section shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
Incidentally, I'm a little unclear on the details in which the Department of Justice gets to say if the election is valid or not. I thought we had an FEC. And Congress. And of course the individual states. Remember, Trump never said there was cheating in Alabama or Alaska. He never once presented evidence of...well, anything really, but specifically a systemic issue that was countrywide. No lawsuits were ever put into place in the vast majorities of states. So I don't see how the Department of Justice could even pretend to have that authority. I would expect them to take action if there was probable cause, which never happened on the federal level, that's possibly why Barr fled. But I must have slept through the day of political science when the DoJ ever got to say "the election is corrupt" and let the current WH decided if they won the election or not.According to Donoghue’s notes, which were obtained by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Rosen told Trump: “understand that the DOJ can’t + won’t snap its fingers + change the outcome of the election, doesn’t work that way.” Trump replied, according to the notes: “Don’t expect you to do that, just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen.” Trump also implied that he would fire anyone who didn’t comply. “People tell me Jeff Clark is great,” he said. “I should put him in. People want me to replace DOJ leadership.” (Jeff Clark led the Justice Department's civil division.)
But maybe I'm in the wrong mindset. @TexasRules you seem to be pretty active and are a proven Trump supporter, voter, and long-term defender. Perhaps you could find the part of the Constitution that gives the DoJ that authority? I mean, if you don't, I'll just take that as evidence that you know Trump was asking the impossible + illegal, which you're totally allowed to do. But maybe you want to look first? I would expect a Trump supporter, which you have proven yourself to be, would at least look, because if you don't even look, that means you're admitting that you voted and publicly backed a tyrant.
So let's talk about Florida.
It's fucked.
"Are you talking about the invasion of sharks?"
Not in this thread, no. I'm talking about the upcoming class-action lawsuit against the state.
Broward County school district just dropped its mask mandate after DeSantis threatened any district that had one with funding cuts.
Broward County is large. It has the second most people of any Florida county. It has the second most cases/day, I know, what a coincidence, of any Florida county. (Per capita it's not that bad in context, merely the upper half in a state that seems intent on suicide) And their mask mandate was just removed due to budget cut threats.
The school year starts in...(checks FL news)...the 18th? "In Two Weeks". What follows infections by about two weeks? Deaths.
I think it's not just possible, not just likely, but nearly unavoidable that Broward County is going to see some parents and/or teachers catch COVID and die. I think the mask mandate they backed off from due to force, will be the starting point of a lawsuit against DeSantis, the state, or both. Obviously this won't be today or tomorrow. And who knows, maybe enough people will just choose to send their kids with masks anyhow, mandate or not. Or, maybe they'll run out and get vaccinated (Broward County is 52% vaccinated). Honestly I'd rather be embarrassed about being wrong than say "See, look at all those parents and teachers dying". Hell, shove it in my face if/when I am wrong, that'd be good news.
I just don't think I'll be wrong.
It's a lot harder to run for President when you're also being sued for murder.
As per usual it's not really worth doing a full report for Monday because it's underreported (nationally; not singling out specific states here), but here's a quickie:
56,369 new cases--about 4k more than last Monday--and 213 deaths (40 more than last Monday), bringing the total to 629,862. Florida did not have numbers for Monday nor did they last Monday, but I expect things haven't magically turned around during the weekend. We'll find out tomorrow if they deign to report...or we can continue looking at the news:
Nearly 140 Pediatric Patients in Florida Hospitals With COVID
Trump's idiocy continues running rampant through his cult surrogates even after he got voted out of office. Long after he's gone, we're still deep in the TRUMP SHITSHOW.Nearly 140 children are currently hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, as the state now leads the country in pediatric hospitalizations, adult hospitalizations, and daily new case counts.
...
Dr. Claudia Espinosa, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the University of South Florida, told the Times that she is "terrified" about the number of children in hospitals, and what's going to happen as kids begin returning to school next month.
Espinosa said the best way to protect children from contracting the virus would be to encourage the use of face masks during in-person instruction. But last week, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order seeking to ban school mask mandates and cut funding for schools who plan to require facial coverings this fall.
On the positive side of things:
Vaccine Uptake Skyrockets in States Hit by COVID Delta Surge--I guess seeing daily "I should have gotten the vaccine" reports from people on their death beds is finally starting to have an impact. If all of the carrots didn't help, then I guess the stick takes the spotlight.
Stay safe, folks.
It looks like they're doing the same thing that some countries are doing (like Spain), where they don't report on the weekend (or Sunday/Monday to cover the weekend's numbers), and instead backfill those dates on Tuesday. So later today, we should be able to see updated counts for all three days. I'd expect to see another 14-18k+ each for Sunday/Monday/Tuesday which obviously will significantly raise those overall US numbers for the last few days as well.
EDIT: Actually, according to the Wayback Machine, it looks like Florida's weekend numbers weren't updated until Wednesday last week, so maybe we won't see that update til tomorrow?

Yes, that's what a lot of states have been doing the past several months. My comment was more directed at their shady reporting overall and I singled them out purely because they're the state doing the worst in most categories. Monday's numbers overall are usually a wash, though. They may indicate whether we can expect this week to be better/worse than last week, but aren't generally an accurate representation of normal daily totals (for most if not all states). Tomorrow will be interesting.
