Could we move this discussion? I only mentioned it at all because the source had recently misfired. There's a thread for Ukraine.

I'm mentioning this, because you said the source misfired. The polish PM probably hadn't been asked yet by the US, with whom ukraine was communicating. The articles I'm linking are from hours after the PM making that post, suggesting the situation may have changed. I'm disputing whether or not that source is trustworthy. I have no idea either way, but the data point you are using to disparage them doesn't, as yet, seem to support that depiction.

A few loud members of the Party of Trump are trying to warn the DoJ off from investigating Trump for all those things Trump did.

Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) said any criminal referral from the House “would probably have as much political taint on it as you can get.”

“To me it’s clearly politically driven,” he said.

Braun said Democrats are scrambling to change up the political narrative in response to Biden’s moribund job approval ratings and predicted launching a federal prosecution of Trump would be viewed along partisan lines.

“At least half the country would say it’s all politically motivated,” he said.

This is the only defense they have left. "You can't investigate Trump for all those crimes we know he did, that would be partisan" is not the same as "Trump did nothing wrong" (a lie, but at least it's defendable) or "Investigate away, there's plenty of evidence and no man is above the law" (the correct answer).

Also, who wants to bet Sen. Braun stood up and applauded when Trump said he'd investigate Clinton during the debates? Or just as good, did Sen. Braun say anything about that in as negative a way as this? Hold on.

I can't find anything from June 1 to Nov 1, 2016. Anything later is irrelevant. I had to look twice, because I forgot he wasn't a Senator yet, but he was in Indy's House so it still would have made local news if he had. Perhaps someone else will find it.

“I don’t mind looking into the events but I think that Speaker Pelosi did not do the process justice by the way the members were ultimately seated,” Tillis said. “It’s going to be perceived as political."

“Everybody is going to perceive the referral as a conviction on one side and they’re going to view it as the continuation of a witch hunt on the other side,” he added. “The bar that the House committee has is far lower than anything that would ultimately result in moving forward with a federal investigation and a conviction.”

This is a far more reasonable thing to say. I will also re-assert my hopes that charges are filed right when Trump is in the middle of something important. Oh, they don't have to be against Trump personally. Nothing would make a 2024 rally more interesting than Trump cutting off mid-sentence when Rudy calls, begging for bail money. Or Trump giving an interview on FOX News when they have to break away to the NY AG boarding up Trump Tower.

EDIT: I should add, I agree that the investigation is politically driven. Trump committed a political crime, trying to overthrow the government. Of course a political crime gets a political investigation. It would be strange if it didn't.

Jesse Benton, former Rand Paul aide pardoned by Trump for paying an Iowa Senator candidate to switch his endorsement in 2012, is back in trouble again. This time he "conspired to illegally funnel thousands of dollars of foreign money from Russian foreign nationals" in the 2016 campaign. Which he got paid a cool hundred grand for.

Oh, and I don't think it's important but he also managed Mitch McConnell's campaign in 2014.

The Canadian Truck Convoy was primarily organized by alt-right, anarchist groups who started as early as 2019 working on a protest similar to the Yellow Jacket protest in France in 2018. Vaccine mandates and truckers were more recent additions.

IMHO, many of the truckers involved were dupes who lent their vehicles to a protest which was more anti-government and anti-Trudeau than it was anti-mandates.

As @cubby no doubt takes great joy in pointing out, the conspiracy charges are the big suckers. By their very nature, they are worse crimes and have more people involved. The Proud Boys now join the Oath Keepers in this lovely little league of conspirators. If they were urged to proceed by, oh I don't know, Team Trump, they have a tough choice coming: turn on Team Trump and hand over evidence to save their skins, or stay quiet and see what the name "Proud Boy" gets you in the prison shower.
