Congress strips ZTE penalty provision from must-pass defense bills

In a concession to the White House, Republicans in Congress weakened a provision to levy harsh penalties on Chinese telecom giant ZTE from the must-pass annual defense bill on Friday.

I'm going to try a new thing.

Previously, I refused to put people on ignore, or let the bad faith posters get away with their nonsense posting, because I believed that it was improper to turn away from any opinion, however vile. And every person is still a person behind their opinion. Their profound evil (and by did I see the usual suspects post a lot of evil in the past two weeks) had to be answered.

My interaction with the management here this last ban has lead me to conclude that they have no interest in actively cleaning up this place. So I'm going to take the opposite tact. I'm going to throw the bad faith posters on the ignore list and just treat them not like people anymore. They're going to play their little games? Well then they're not worthy of basic human dignity, my respect, or my time. I will talk about what they have to say or represent in order to torch it, but not to them. They don't get a word from me.

Forum management doesn't want to clean up the joint for people of diverse opinions to interact, so I'm going to push the forum in the opposite direction: pretend people on the other side aren't people, and don't exist. That way there are two stratified forum communities: the Reality Based Community and the Fascist Trump Cult Caucus.

Honestly, I've been throwing Trump supporters onto ignore for the past several months. You can't discuss anything with them anyway. You can outright prove them wrong, and then they just move the goalposts like it's a caber toss. It's a waste of time. My time is worth more to me than they are.

Yeah, can we just make a note that, with Nixon, a pardon arguably made sense, because it was an aberration and the country needed to move on.

Now? The country needs to know that this kind of shenaniganery won't be tolerated, and that means leveling and enforcing consequences. No pardons. No slaps on wrists. Sentences should be at the top of where they can go, unless you're offering them a deal in exchange for information on a bigger fish.

I stated this awhile back. I'm not doing a "I am right, look at me", but more of I wish my other fellow posters would follow you. First off they are trying to get a reaction and we have a word for it but yeah I might get dinged if I call them that.

More to the point is if this was in public and face to face you would walk away from 99.9% of these people since they can't even put one ounce of truth into their statements.

I say ignore em all and don't reply. Please Don't Feed the (name I can't say). If we do not feed em hopefully they whither away and die. Yes you are correct and I stated this that by ignoring opposite opinions, you are creating your own bubble. Let's be serious here in that these people are not even genuine in their comments, so why listen.

I guess the question is - are discussions with those kind of posters likely to change minds?

Their minds? Hell no. I think it's unlikely that there are any good faith posters actively supporting Trump here. We know their tired whataboutism routines, their deflections, their attempts to derail, etc.

But think of it this way - sometimes, replying to those posters gives the opportunity to respond to everyone else. Assuming these forums are like most, for every active poster, there are more lurkers.

You're not making points or arguing to change the minds of Alley, Locked, Shaclker or Primary, etc. You're making a case to the quieter types who rarely if ever post.

In saying all of that, there are plenty of scenarios where their points are not even worth replying to, and in that case, there's no value in joining them in derailment exercises.
