There's almost never such thing as "the most qualified person". Pretty much every job posting gets a gaggle of qualified candidates and typically hiring managers parse things down to who they FEEL might be a better fit for the position/team. You obviously have no fucking idea what DEI actually means, but I guarantee you that it doesn't mean "hire unqualified people". The issue that DEI is designed to address is the FACT that historically when it came time to determine who FELT like the best pick from all the ones that were qualified, certain groups of people were more likely to be passed up due to biases (both implicit and explicit).
What you have between your legs, the color of your skin, whether your name sounds "foreign", whether you have a disability of some sort will ALWAYS be taken into consideration in some respect because ultimately hiring is done by people and people are biased. Demonizing and getting rid of DEI initiatives basically guarantees that minorities will be negatively impacted due to bias. Period.
