A fairly basic google search spits out the info that the average Accurate range of a modern sniper rifle is nearly one kilometre. That's a shitload of range for the SS to be covering in the event that there are any relatively determined angry marksmen with access to a modern weapon willing to make the attempt.

Personally, if I was Trump, I'd be way more worried about some rando with enough prep time getting "creative". Like, modern camera drones are capable of hitting flight ceilings of several KILOMETERS while carrying multi pound payloads. Not sure how good detection tech is for that kind of thing, but I doubt most SS agents are going to spot a drone not much bigger than a lunchbox painted sky blue cruising at 2K altitude, and I'd be 100% willing to believe you could get it over a Trump golf course and drop a small guided ordinance on him before anyone realized what had happened.

I'm fairly certain there is pretty good coverage of flight radars anywhere the POTUS might be visiting. Regular air traffic control radar picks up all consumer grade drones handily already.

On topic: the NYTimes reports that

The requested route — referred to as Route 4 at Reagan National — followed a specific path known to the air traffic controller and helicopter pilots. The helicopter confirmed visual sight of a regional jet and the air traffic controller instructed the helicopter to follow the route and fly behind the plane.

But the helicopter did not follow the intended route, the people briefed on the matter said.

Rather, it was above 300 feet, when it was supposed to be flying below 200 feet, and it was at least a half-mile off the approved route when it collided with the commercial jet.

But I think we can maybe say all the knee-jerk blaming of Biden's DEI FAA are, well, seemingly irrelevant.

Trump yelled on Truth Social Friday morning that the helicopter involved in the fatal crash in Washington, D.C., “was flying too high, by a lot.”

Apparently lashing out at people who disagreed with his aeronautical analysis, he wrote: “It was far above the 200-foot limit. That’s not really too complicated to understand, is it???”

By the way, I am <sarcasm>looking fowards</sarcasm> to the upcoming increase in air crashes that a qualified FAA and air traffic controller could have helped. Trump took steps to make the air more dangerous, and he did it on purpose. Even a freak accident can be prevented with enough experienced, knowledgeable people involved who know what kind of mistakes can happen and can help minimize them. Throwing out the people who know what they're doing, and bribing the rest to retire, will reverse that option.
