I mean, I dont think this would happen in America, but its really not hard to force people to work. Many countries do it, north korea for example. You just criminalize it at the threat of death and protests mean nothing when the tanks come rolling over people.

Unite as a people. The military can't kill all of you, and even without violence, if nobody works even with guns pointed at their head, you've called their bluff. They want you to make individual choices rather than engage in class solidarity, because the moment you coordinate your actions, they lose. Their options are 1> Give up, or 2> kill the entire working population and now your country collapses and dies.

Especially when the survival alternative is "live as a slave", putting yourself at risk becomes real easy. This is how every slave rebellion in history started out.
