The problem is that we already tried the meet in the middle approach, back in 2017/2018 when Trump was railing against NAFTA. We got a second iteration out of that, yet apparently it's not good enough this time around, so why would any deal with him be trusted? What stops the man from acquiescing to a deal that allows him to proclaim victory on Truth Social, but then changing his mind in two years and deciding the tariffs are now 50% unless Canada, I dunno, submits to his demands to exclusively import American goods or whatever other nonsense he cooks up?
The stand isn't moral as I see it. The stand is that kneeling before a bully is asking for him to demand more and more, that's how they see the world. Canada isn't strong enough to stand up to America's economy, obviously, but the only choices are to either say yes to whatever he says and get our economy kneecapped hoping he doesn't go for the jugular next time, or try to stand up alongside the others who will get similarly targeted. Granted that's hardly foolproof in and of itself, as American voter have proven cultish enough towards the guy that even acutely felt economic consequences on their hand might not make them punish the Republicans, but we already tried negotiating on his terms and he spat in our faces next chance he got. Fool me once and all that.
