The problem is that we already tried the meet in the middle approach, back in 2017/2018 when Trump was railing against NAFTA. We got a second iteration out of that, yet apparently it's not good enough this time around, so why would any deal with him be trusted? What stops the man from acquiescing to a deal that allows him to proclaim victory on Truth Social, but then changing his mind in two years and deciding the tariffs are now 50% unless Canada, I dunno, submits to his demands to exclusively import American goods or whatever other nonsense he cooks up?

The stand isn't moral as I see it. The stand is that kneeling before a bully is asking for him to demand more and more, that's how they see the world. Canada isn't strong enough to stand up to America's economy, obviously, but the only choices are to either say yes to whatever he says and get our economy kneecapped hoping he doesn't go for the jugular next time, or try to stand up alongside the others who will get similarly targeted. Granted that's hardly foolproof in and of itself, as American voter have proven cultish enough towards the guy that even acutely felt economic consequences on their hand might not make them punish the Republicans, but we already tried negotiating on his terms and he spat in our faces next chance he got. Fool me once and all that.

I don't think any country is going to give up their sovereignty regardless of how high he puts the tariffs. He is single handedly rising up Trudeau's party and destroying right wing allies with ties to Musk. I suspect we will get the same reaction once he puts tariffs on Europe which might be a good thing, Trump may kill the rise of the right in Europe.

Maybe I am jaded but I don't see any situation where Trump supporters will turn on him, they live in an alternate reality. They will blame high prices and the recession on DEI or some bullshit.

You know, not that it's any consolation, but I feel like there haven't been precedented times that last much longer than a decade at most.

Prior to Trump you had the Obama years and the latter Bush years, but 9/11 was pretty unprecedented. Before that you had a decade of pretty good times following the fall of the Berlin Wall, but the years before that were rough. Korea, Vietnam and the cold war, and that's just the American centric view.

Feels like this is just the cycle of things and we'll have to het through it too.

I'd say it's a grim insight into how other fascist powers got into office, but this is even stupider. The USSR spawned as a rebuke against the old monarchy and only got -real- bad when Stalin took charge, Hitler and Mussolini enacted local policies to win over and placate their constituents -then- got more public with the evil, and in any other case they just rallied loyalist militaries to overthrow the government.

It's a mix.

A legitimate, serious Republican candidate would never get elected. So the party reached out and embraced literal hate groups, then stood behind a buffoon who had spent decades fooling the weak-minded into believing he was smart, strong, and good with money.

The hate groups love him because it legitimizes them in a way they could never otherwise hope for. The stupid worship him because they buy into his relentless self-aggrandizement. And the stubborn conservatives latch onto him because they're abjectly desperate to remain relevant in a world that wants to pass them by.
