Yes 1899 is the same as 2025 today. Nothing has changed people.

Plus obviously both times US did tariffs drove a recession, but lets not talk history people.

President Trump imposes tariffs on indulgences from the Holy See

President Donald Trump, who has been in an ongoing fight with Pope Francis over migration, Gaza, Ukraine and global warming, has imposed tariffs on indulgences and other products imported from the Holy See.

“Why should we import indulgences from the Vatican when we have domestic producers like Paula White who offer products that are much better,” said a White House spokesperson.

Paula White, head of the new White House Faith Office and a proponent of the prosperity Gospel, last month promised seven supernatural blessings for the Easter season to her followers if they sent her $1,000 or more. (While the rest of this column is satire, this particular offer from White is real.)

White’s “seven blessings” was no doubt an effort to cut into the indulgence market that the Holy See has dominated for centuries.

“Our blessings are seven times better than indulgences, which only get you out of Purgatory,” explained Trump, in introducing the Vatican tariffs. “It’s a bigger bang for the buck.”

A long-time supporter of the president, White has often publicly prayed for Trump, including in the week before the election, when she stood alongside several other religious leaders as they prayed over Trump at a faith-focused campaign event. The president recalled the prayer as he announced his “pope penalty” tariffs in front of the White House with White at his side.

At this point, I can't differentiate between joke and actual news anymore.

The religious right in Trump's ear despise Catholics, especially one that is relatively (emphasis on relative so people don't get upset) liberal pope. Just 60 - 70 years ago they would have been messing with Catholics in one way or another. Ironically Rubio is a Catholic, even went on TV on Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent) with a black cross on his forehead.

Seeing Trump called the EU an org to rip the US off on live tv

He really is just an idiot. The fact that he is fumbling his way towards fascism is amazing

Everything I've read suggests to me that's mostly A. Trump is stupid, and has surrounded himself with yes men, and also anyone who understands this is a bad idea knows that trying to tell him that will result in him just digging in harder and then firing them for disagreeing, so they've convinced themselves it's easier to just "ride it out."

Which I guess is a slightly long-winded way of saying everyone in in the administration who is either stupid or a coward.

Interesting. I thought Catholics were all about the Pope? Trump only loves himself and doesn't give a rats ass about some guy in the Vatican, but what about the rest of the Americans? Or are we long past that, and worship the golden calf in the White House instead?

Either way, it's hilarious. If this is true, then satire is dead.

    How the turns have tabled.

The US Chamber of Commerce is looking to sue the Trump administration over these tariffs.

Remember folks, this is the largest lobbying group in the US as far as businesses go. I guess enough of their members has gotten real upset over this.

That has to be a joke. It is too absurd even for Trump.

This might be their way of asking the Senators and Representatives they lobby nicely. The US Chamber of Commerce tends not to move until things are, well, this bad. They also tend to win cases against federal targets. They sued Trump as he was heading out the door, specifically with respect to visas, and won.

If they are saying "this federal situation is bad" they are likely taking notes on who agrees with them, before the next check-writing election cycle.

I get your frustration, but the biggest dog in the kennel doesn't growl unless it's ready to tear out your throat.

That's because he doesn't want fair trade he wants trade parity, he wants the EU to buy just as much as the US buys from them which is impossible and not how trade works. The EU's tariff on the US is 2% so 0% is no big deal but Trump says EU has 40% tariffs, there's no way to negotiate when you can't even agree on reality.

This folds into the Vietnam situation. Vietnam cannot import enough American goods to balance the goods-only trade balance, the only number Trump used in that fucking stupid-ass equation he probably got from Trump University. They can't afford to. Telling the world they'd lower their tariffs from "nearly nothing" to "nothing" was just a way of demonstrating Trump was lying, but also, literally their only choice other than telling Trump to fuck off like China did. Simply put, if Trump does in-

Vietnam's Offer of Zero Tariffs on U.S. Goods Won’t Cut It, Navarro Says

    Yep.

“Let’s take Vietnam. When they come to us and say ‘we’ll go to zero tariffs,’ that means nothing to us because it’s the non-tariff cheating that matters,” Navarro said in an interview on CNBC. He cited Chinese products being routed through Vietnam and intellectual property theft as examples. He later clarified the 0% offer would be a “small first start,” CNBC reported.
"What non-tariff cheating is used in Trump's formula?"

Literally nothing. It's been shown dozens of times by now it's purely a trade gap calculation.

You think the religious right in America likes Catholics? They don't but can legally discriminate against them. Part of me thinks he is doing it just to be petty towards Biden and/or Hispanics.
