Once the markets start going up again, right wings mouthbreathers that a perhaps a little concerned will come in here screeching about how great the Trump economy is, while ignoring that we're at best flat from where we started 4 months ago.

But when they snip the data for the past day, the line will be going up, so great victory.

    Keep the line:

“The economy was better under Biden/things were cheaper under Biden.”

Because they can’t really respond to that. When Trump supporters are forced into “umm well actually…” they completely crumble because they don’t really understand what’s going on.

Indeed, this remains "market somewhat recovers when Trump announces he'll stop doing that thing that made the markets go down".

+1000 points and still down over a thousand since Trump took office. Trump is a net loss.

Make sure you mention the GDP went down, and use the exact line

The decrease in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected an increase in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, and a decrease in government spending.
In other words, Trump threatened tariffs, people snap-bought a bunch of imports to get out in front of the tariffs, and that dropped the GDP due to Trump's direct words and actions.

I still really cannot tell what the EO does. Seems all high level which means nothing will really change.

Trump's approval is tanking and he needs some good news to bring it back up.

It makes headlines. Trump's E.O. will not affect the average person who is not using a government source of medication, because no E.O. does that.

Further, I was under the impression that Medicare/Medicaid prices were set by contracts, and you can't just break a contract with an E.O. It would be well within the vendors' rights to say "I do not agree to amend the contract, and accepting such a large price drop will put me out of business" and just not supply the meds to the government.

Let's talk about what Trump is at least claiming he'll do: lower the cost to the government to the same cost as the lowest cost country out there. Those countries are very likely small countries. A large manufacturer could take the hit selling smaller amounts of their stock as long as they maintained their normal prices on larger markets. Even if it's just Medicare and Medicaid in the US, that's still a lot of people.

In other words, it's like the 75% tariffs on Madagascar, an island with like four penguins and a thriving vanilla crop. Or, offering free coffee to veterans and having a coward draft dodger demand everyone else get it, too.

Pharm providers can either choose to just not accept this, or to move the costs to other customers, namely, Americans on insurance. So, sorry guys, if anything this will increase your prices, because I do not believe that Pfizer will look at this E.O. and say "I'm going to voluntarily take the massive reduction in revenue and profits".

That's mostly what it is, I think. If you could just say "I choose to lower all drug costs to all people on Medicare/Medicaid" like that, why hasn't anyone, including Trump, done this before? I posit it's because it doesn't work.

Yeah it's just a headline grabber; and it'll probably be the only one of his stupid EO's he and his cabal of goblins don't bother trying to actually enforce.

It's just something for the -other- goblins to point at and shriek 'Hah! See Trump is doing good thing, yes yes! You big stupid libtards just big mad with Trump Derangement syndrome! I am very intellegent!' then stop talking about it when it falls through.

Trump administration ends protections from deportation for Afghans
    https://thehill.com/policy/national-...n-deportation/

The republican cruelty knows no bounds.

The Trump administration on Monday formally lifted a shield on deportation of Afghans in the U.S, arguing improving conditions in the Taliban-run country mean its citizens here no longer merit such protections.

The announcement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans, a protection ignited by the Biden administration after the U.S. withdrawal amid deteriorating conditions in the country.

TPS can be ignited when the administration concludes it’s not safe to deport someone to their country due to civil unrest or other dangerous conditions.

“This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a release on Monday.

“We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation. Afghanistan has had an improved security situation, and its stabilizing economy no longer prevent them from returning to their home country.”

Yeah the Admin has made it explicitly clear that the only refugees they give a shit about are white ones.

"but Trump said 'they just 'happen to be white!'' yeah but we're not fucking morons and it's clear why he felt like he had to mention that.

I am not gonna comment on the South African situation cuz I know nothing about it but yeah it seems ridiculous that they are being given a priority over people in Afghanistan? Kristina Noem literally would not be able to give a speech in Afghanistan, let alone for an ordinary Afghan woman. Most importantly, many of the people that are US refugees are people that fought for the US and were active enemies of the Taliban. Like are they gonna be sent to Afghanistan just to make space for people in South Africa? The priorities are out of whack

Just so we're clear, they will not find $880 billion in fraud and waste. They already tried their best, including canceling orders that can't be canceled a second time, and still came out literally negative. The cuts will come from throwing people off health care. Like the CBO said in the linked article, 8.6 million people.

    Interesting.

Let’s see what the US state department says about Afghanistan (as per https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...-advisory.html )

Do not travel to Afghanistan due to civil unrest, crime, terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities.

Country Summary: The U.S. Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in 2021. The U.S. government is not able to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan.

Multiple terrorist groups are active in Afghanistan and U.S. citizens are targets of kidnapping and hostage-taking. The Taliban have harassed and detained aid and humanitarian workers. The activities of foreigners may be viewed with suspicion, and reasons for detention may be unclear. Even if you are registered with the appropriate authorities to conduct business, the risk of detention is high.

The Department has determined there is a risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals in Afghanistan. Additionally, Afghan-U.S. citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) who previously supported the United States (for example, as an interpreter) in Afghanistan may be targeted for detention.

The Taliban do not regularly permit the United States to conduct welfare checks on U.S. citizens in detention, including by phone. Detention can be lengthy. While in detention, U.S. citizens have limited or no access to medical attention and may be subject to physical abuse.

U.S. citizens should not travel to Afghanistan for any reason, including to accompany eligible family members for relocation.
Hmm, seems like they don’t think Afghanistan is all that rosy of a place.
@tehdang I know you’re generally not supportive of trumps economic policies but you seem pretty in line with his anti-immigrant/refugee policies, can you rectify the Trump administration simultaneously saying that Afghanis should be subject to deportation back to Afghanistan because it’s a great place these days while also saying that Afghanistan is a dangerous place controlled by terrorists?

@Somewhatconcerned you can get back to me when you’ve pieced together whatever pathetic excuse you’re twisting over backwards to levy for Trump’s economy continuing to falter compared to Biden’s.

    I don't know which article/headline I like better:

    China Called Trump’s Bluff

The unveiling of the Trump global tariff regime was accompanied by a distinct form of dominance theater. The president and his gang assured his targets that if they submitted to his tariffs, he would repay their compliance. Any country that dared defy him would suffer terribly.

“I wouldn’t want to be the last country that tries to negotiate a trade deal with $realDonaldTrump,” posted Eric Trump. “The first to negotiate will win—the last will absolutely lose. I have seen this movie my entire life.”
"A movie? Shouldn't he be referencing real life?"

No, he's a Team Trump member, all lies and showmanship. Real life is the last thing they'd want to reference, it's never on their side.

Most of the world accepted this advice, only to discover the difficulty of making global trade deals with a president who doesn’t seem to understand how trade works. Foreign diplomats expressed repeated frustration as they failed to ascertain what Trump even wanted from them, let alone what he was prepared to offer in return. To date, only the United Kingdom has managed to resolve its trade status with the United States.

China, however, retaliated with countermeasures of its own, imposing steep tariffs on American imports. Trump decided to make an example of the country. “Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” he announced on Truth Social. (This figure eventually increased to 145 percent.) Other countries, which had showed proper respect, would receive a merciful reprieve. “The world is ready to work with President Trump to fix global trade, and China has chosen the opposite direction,” claimed Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
You know the accent. "A few moments later"

Trump held out for one month before backing down. Under the new 90-day agreement, tariffs on Chinese goods will come down to 30 percent; China’s tariffs on American goods will likewise decline to 10 percent. “The consensus from both delegations is that neither side wanted a decoupling,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced at a press conference in Geneva, as if the whole thing had been one big misunderstanding. The decades of China allegedly “ripping off” the United States were apparently forgotten, along with China’s insolence in retaliating and the supposed need for the U.S. to reduce its reliance on Chinese imports. The administration isn’t even pretending that it forced China to pay any special price for its defiance. It is memory-holing the entire “do not retaliate” episode and moving on as if the point this whole time was to get along better with Beijing.

When Trump launched his trade war on the world, he issued a stern warning: "Do not retaliate and you will be rewarded." China ignored the warning. It was rewarded anyway. This morning, Trump largely suspended his trade war in return for nothing but promises of ongoing discussions. There is a lesson here for everybody Trump threatens, whether countries or businesses or universities.
    or, this one:

Trump walks back problem he created; declares victory

Admittedly it's not as big of of a source, but that headline.

I mean, this is a pretty loaded question. Trump voters have proven they're aligned with terrorists in general and Afghanistan terrorists specifically, on account of Trump working out a deal by negotiating with them directly.

I believe they'll hide behind work requirements, which is a sociopathic thing to say while they're also cheering tariffs that kill jobs.
