Judge temporarily blocks Trump’s National Guard deployment in Portland
"Okay, but what if Trump just does it anyhow?"
I really hope he doesn't, and here's why:
1) Trump is a coward. Trump might act like he has no limits to his power, but he does not want to try the patience of SCOTUS right now. Ordering full uniform, full weaponry, US military troops to act on US taxpayer unarmed civilians when there is no emergency could be viewed as an impeachable offense, but worse for Trump, could be all SCOTUS needs to actually start ruling against him. SCOTUS knows full well how useless they are in a full-on dictatorship. It is in their best interest to remain relevant.
2) Trump just looked his entire top brass in the eye. None of them blinked. He does not have their full cultist support, and he knows that.
3) US military have no obligation to obey an illegal order, and in fact, are dutybound to reject them. As of now, that order is illegal. Within 24 hours of the aforementioned speech, one top officer resigned and one was fired. He gives a blatantly illegal order, in public, on purpose, he'd be basically authorizing a full-scale revolt.
Now, in a lot of cases, having 10-50% turnover between officers and troops might be something he could survive. Trump is provoking wars in the Middle East, with Venezuela, and with Russia. Trump, basically, needs a war to distract the American people from the damage he's personally done. Hardly a new tactic. But those wars would at least be legal, and those wars would at least have broader support. If he neuters the armed forces and drives what's left into chaos, what will the rest of the world do, when we'll have trouble sticking our nose in? Or hitting back? Russia might not go as far as to nuke us or invade Alaska, but they'd push harder into Ukraine knowing NATO can't count on us. Israel might swallow nervously while looking around. Venezuela would laugh maniacally and flip us off. And China would just smile and nod.
And at this point, who is willing to enlist, knowing they'd be called to bear arms against unarmed American civilians, who has not enlisted already?
Trump has bigger problems than Portland. The coward he's proven to be again and again should just get a TACO and continue with the National Guard, 29 days at a time, like before.
