Known as the Esmerelda 7, the collection of seven solar projects in rural Nevada was set to generate up to 6.2 gigawatts of energy when complete, enough to power 2 million homes. Under former President Joe Biden, the federal government was moving the sprawling project through the federal permitting process as one proposal. Developers had planned to use 118,000 acres of federal land in Nevada’s desert as the home for solar arrays and batteries to store the sun’s energy.

I have learned usually when trump does something that appears confusing, one can chalk it up to two things. Dr. Phil McGraw's attempt to transition from daytime television personality to a politically aligned media mogul during Donald Trump's second presidential term has been marked by spectacular failure and financial turmoil, according to a new report.

Since the start of Trump's presidency, ex-psychologist and famed TV doctor McGraw positioned himself as an active participant in the administration. He became a firsthand witness to ICE raids, a critic of protests, and an ever-present volunteer for the executive branch — attending events like RFK Jr.'s swearing-in and appearing with Trump after the Texas flooding.

But his media venture, Merit Street Media, launched in 2024 with grand ambitions and alignment with MAGA media, has been crumbling since, Slate reported Tuesday. McGraw declared at the time, "American families and our core values are under attack. Together we are going to stand strong and fight for the very soul and sanity of America."

However, the network quickly unraveled. Within months of launching, Merit Street Media experienced multiple setbacks.

Dozens of employees have been laid off as it averaged just 27,000 weekly viewers, broadcasting partnerships floundered and, in July, it filed for bankruptcy.

It also got hit by a lawsuit from distributor Trinity Broadcasting Network accusing McGraw of fraud and misrepresentation, Slate reported.

However, this move was viewed skeptically, with Professional Bull Riders — which claims Merit Street Media owes in $3.5 million — accusing him of orchestrating the bankruptcy to avoid paying debts, Slate reported.

There are already numerous MAGA-aligned media personalities, and McGraw's approach lacks the authenticity of those who have been consistently politically engaged, Slate reported.

"McGraw decries politics in one breath, then repeatedly pops up at the White House and films videos about 'Cowardly Democrats' who 'Spit in the Face of All Texans," Slate reported.

Pseudoscience “wellness” was big in the stay-at-home mom demographic and for a time in the early to mid 2000s that group was more liberal than conservative. (COVID and the ensuing conspiracies having shifted those political allegiances significantly since.) That kind of “topic” would have been popular with Oprah’s audience at the time.

Additionally fading stars, especially ones like Phil where there’s some grift or theatrics involved, who might not have had a discernible political bent originally will turn to the easiest rubes to dupe to try and stay relevant, and there are fewer easier marks than American conservatives. “Go where the money is,” and such.

All of the Bay Area’s major airports have opted not to play a video of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem saying Democrats are to blame for the federal government shutdown.

The video is intended to play at security lines, with Noem stating, “It is TSA’s top priority to make sure that you have the most pleasant and efficient experience as possible while we keep you safe,” CNN reported.

“However, Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government, and because of this, many of our operations are impacted, and most of our TSA employees are working without pay,” Noem says.

The video is currently not playing at either the Oakland, San Jose or San Francisco international airports, spokespeople for the airports said in emails to this news organization.

“Operations at SJC are continuing without disruption, so no additional messaging in the terminals is necessary,” San Jose Mineta International Airport said in a statement. “In the event of any operational impacts, airport-specific messaging will be used to keep passengers informed and ensure they have a seamless travel experience at SJC.”

In a statement, Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport said the video is “not running at OAK at this time,” adding it “appreciates its partners at the Transportation Security Administration as they perform their important work in support of the safe and secure travel of OAK passengers.”

A spokesperson for the San Francisco International Airport said the “video is not being played at SFO, consistent with our policy prohibiting any messaging of a political nature.”

It was not immediately clear if the Oakland and San Jose airports received a request from TSA to run the video.

A spokesperson for the Port of Portland, which operates Portland International Airport, told CNN it declined TSA’s request to play the video because it violates the Hatch Act, a 1939 law that restricts certain political activities by federal employees.

The Cleveland, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Seattle-Tacoma international airports have also declined to run the video.
