Raúl Grijalva, a Democrat in the House from Arizona, has tested positive for COVID. He had been at the Bill Barr hearing on Tuesday, which of course was also attended by Louie Gohmert. While nothing can be proven, it's very possible that Gohmert is the one who gave him COVID. That selfish, maskless fuck has probably infected at least a few people through his recklessness and assholishness.

If someone dies from COVID and their family can show they were in the vicinity of a maskless fuck like Gohmert who had COVID, they should be able to file a civil lawsuit. That might be the only thing that gets these morons to start taking it seriously.

Trump started the term by demanding travel bans and is ending it with everyone else, banning our travel. I thought those sort of swings took decades... oh well...

its a way of them distancing themselves from the monster that is trump without having to change any of thier political ideas that led to him.

I think a Trump defeat will show the republicans that a LOT of what Trump hardlined on, and what his base feeds off of... Despotic immigration restrictions, xenophobia, flippant trade wars, overbearing use of police forces, and fanatical Christianity... are not something that are tenable platform positions.

Meaning that they'll fall back on their farcical economic policies instead. But at leas there's debate that can be had with economic policy that isn't directly gambling with things like locking children in cages or having peaceful protestors tear gassed.

That seems optimistic. Unless he loses in a landslide so massive it shifts the continents, I doubt it will spur much of a reevaluation of anything. Because the base that supports those things is as fervent as ever. Just look at how easily something that should have been as uncontroversial as wearing a mask during a pandemic was turned into a rallying cry.

And look what it's costing them. I don't think the majority of republican congressmen are stupid. I think they're greedy. They've feigned stupidity and complacency to supplicate Trump, but they know now that his stupidity is actively harming people to very a conspicuous degree; a degree they're going to share the blame for.

Look at Mitch's marching orders... "don't actively go against Trump, but don't support him if you don't want to." They know he's harmful. THEY have no illusions that Trump is some grand savior like his base does. And they're not concerned with Trump or his policies; they're concerned with maintaining the republican party in a position of power. Trump has become antithetical to that.

As far as "degree of loss goes"... Trump will have lost as a one term president. We haven't had a one-term president in going on 30 years. That, combined with protests across the nation and with them losing the house in 2019 will be a pretty stinging indictment of Republican policy, especially under Trump. A literal "in the door, out the door" with a republican president.

And yes, it is optimistic. But frankly, I really only see two ways out of this... either the republicans overhaul their party, or they lose more and more power and slide into political obsolescence on a national scale. Frankly, either result is fine as far as I'm concerned.

But of course all of this is dependent upon a Biden victory in November. And as we can already see, Trump is working his damnedest to make it as hard as possible for people to vote and cast doubt on the validity of his removal.

Despotic immigration restrictions, xenophobia, flippant trade wars, overbearing use of police forces, and fanatical Christianity are their base. Knowing this group doesn't hold a future doesn't help when this group are the ones who have the votes to chose the GOP's candidates for them.

Remember, they didn't want Trump to win the primary either, their base just chose for them. And switching your base isn't something you just do.

And going full on xenophope, "omg, the president is black" let them win the House and Senate like 10? years ago.
The problem isn't that trump is a racist, xenophobe. Its that he was slightly to stupid.

Video resurfaces of Trump struggling to vote in person in 2004 as he ramps up attacks on mail-in voting
    https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/07/31/p...mpression=true

Oh wow! This is hilarious at so many levels. The peak of the Shitshow.

The "Access Hollywood" segment, filmed as Trump was attempting to vote in the 2004 election, shows Trump alongside TV host Billy Bush visiting multiple New York City polling locations. Trump, however, is blocked from voting at each location because he is not on any of the voter rolls at each stop.

Trump can be seen becoming increasingly frustrated before declaring, "I'm going to fill out the absentee ballot."
I mean he visits multiple polling stations. Idk how you don't know your polling station, but whatever. Then him for convenience fills out a provisional ballot.

The video below is classic Trump. Walking around clueless, looking like an idiot not knowing how and where to vote.

But being indecisive is common with Trump and others who suffer from "I am always right", dementia, or other related mental illnesses.

Trump is struggling to stick to a consistent message that resonates with voters, vacillating almost daily between scripted events and remarks and incendiary commentary that risks alienating key voting blocs in an election year.

The whiplash was on full display this week, as Trump made a series of trips to underscore his administration’s focus on the coronavirus pandemic and economy.

Trump traveled to North Carolina on Monday for an extremely brief, targeted event to tout progress on a COVID-19 vaccine. On Wednesday, he was in Texas to sign permits boosting oil exports, and on Thursday he stopped by the Red Cross to urge Americans who recovered from the coronavirus to donate convalescent plasma.

But efforts to keep the focus on those events were quickly undone by the president’s claims that low-income housing developments that largely benefit minorities would “destroy” the suburbs, his retweet of a fringe doctor who supports the use of a controversial antimalarial drug to treat COVID-19 and his suggestion that Election Day be delayed.

The president trails presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in national and key swing state polls, particularly among suburban voters who contributed to his victory in 2016, worrying some Republicans who see Trump’s unscripted remarks as increasingly hurting him.

He’s never going to change,” said one Republican operative who requested anonymity to speak candidly. “The most important thing is the state of the economy, the state of COVID and all things health … and in terms of his messaging, the only thing that matters is his messaging over the last 30 days.”

It’s clear that White House political strategists are considering such criticism.

The White House in mid-July shifted its messaging strategy around the coronavirus pandemic as Trump’s approval ratings on the crisis declined and his deficit to Biden in national polls grew.

In the last two weeks, Trump has resumed regular briefings on the coronavirus, and held events meant to highlight the administration's response to the pandemic, which has killed more than 150,000 Americans.

In a contrast to past briefings that were free-wheeling and often went on for more than an hour, the events of the past few weeks have lasted less than 30 minutes, been more focused and featured fewer questions from the media.

Administration officials praised Trump's restraint, pointing to small victories in getting the president to tweet that wearing a mask is “patriotic” and focusing on vaccine development.

But this week, the unscripted Trump started showing up again more often.

Trump wrote a series of late night tweets Monday criticizing Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious diseases expert. He also spread unproven claims about the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug that Trump has latched onto as a potential treatment for COVID-19 despite limited success.

Trump's official events at the Red Cross and in Florida were overshadowed by his tweet musing about delaying the November election, something he does not have the power to do but that set off alarm bells among Democrats who fear the president will cast doubt on the result.

Unpredictability has been a staple of Trump’s time in office, frustrating Republicans who are hoping for a more disciplined closing stretch of the 2020 campaign.

We had the economy contract by 32 percent, and Republicans and Democrats were unable to have any baseline agreement on an unemployment extension let alone a financial relief package, and his tweet about changing the election date dominated the headlines all day,” said Ryan Costello, a former Republican congressman who retired before the 2018 election.

“And I would expect more of that, and if I were a House Republican I would not for a second think that I could lay out a campaign narrative and be able to execute on it without weekly, if not daily, disruptions based on whatever Trump says or does,” he added.
Okay, the article continues but you get the idea. Trump has tried to run on distractions for three years, but can't anymore -- the cure is worse than the disease, from a re-election standpoint. There was honest, legit discussion at the federal level about Trump threatening to move the election -- and every news source except maybe OANN had an honest, legit article about how much damage he could do by trying. There is one message -- the country is in serious fucking trouble. And Trump could wake up the next morning and ban Facebook, the letter Q and magnesium tablets. And nobody, possibly not even Trump, would know a valid reason why.

In case any of you Trump supporters and wondering about Trump's past racism:

A trump supporter asked, "Name one time trump was racist."
    Okay:
1973: The Nixon administration sues Trump for refusing to rent to black people. NIXON said "what the fuck" to Trump.
1980s: Trump casinos are accused of hiding their black staff when Trump visits.
1989: Trump puts out a full-page ad calling for the execution of the Central Park Five, gets sued by the DOJ for discrimination.
1991: "Black guys counting my money! I hate it! The only kinds of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day... I think the [black] guy is lazy. And it's probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is."
1992: Trump's casino is fined $200,000 for pulling black dealers from tables racist patrons liked to play at.
1993: Trump says Native American casinos shouldn't be allowed because "they don't look like Indians to me."
2000: Trump runs a series of attack ads against Native American casinos alleging (with zero proof) that they were guilty of crimes.
2004: Trump fires a black Apprentice contestant for being over-educated.
2010: Trump argues in favor of segregating Muslims in Lower Manhattan.
2011: "Birtherism" is coined by Trump.
2011: Trump alleges that Barack Obama is Kenyan based purely on Obama's skin color. Trump never apologizes, not does he ever retract that claim.
2015: Trump calls Mexican immigrants "rapists" who are "bringing drugs and crime" into the US.
2015: Trump calls for a ban on "all Muslims entering the US."
2016 (buckle up, here's where it gets really fun): Trump calls for a Mexican judge to recuse himself from a case because of his race and nothing else. Paul Ryan called it the textbook definition of a racist statement.
2016: Trump regularly retweets content from Neo-Nazis and white supremacists during his campaign.
2016: Trump tweets a picture alleging Hillary is either Jewish or controlled by Jewish people.
2016: Trump adopts Nixon's "Law and Order" rhetoric, a campaign strategy based in racial fearmongering.
2016: Trump asks black voters "what do you have to lose?"
2017: Trump asks a black reporter to set up a meeting with the black caucus, *because* she is black.
2017: "...some very fine people on both sides," says Trump of a violent Neo-Nazi rally.
2017: Trump says people from Haiti "all have AIDS" and people from Nigeria would never “go back to their huts” after seeing America.
2018: Trump calls Haiti and African countries shitholes.
2018: Trump references the Trail of Tears to mock Elizabeth Warren.
2019: Trump tells four black and brown congresswomen to go back where they came from via Twitter, then goes on to attack Elijah Cummings, then Baltimore, then Al Sharpton.
2020: Trump calls black protesters "THUGS" just days after calling white protesters "very good people," then he threatens to direct the military to shoot the black protestors in the street.
June 2020 Trump calls people at The Villages "very fine people" and retweets video. They were riding golf carts and chanting "white power".
Oh sh*t, you said one time. Sorry, my bad.

Two quick additions before I get to one of the best ice cream parlors in the country, and I have looked:

    1) in addition to everything in my last post, the GOP is increasingly worried their old, sick, frail, dying voter base will be stifled by Trump's assault on mailed votes.

    2) TikTok has officially responded with a variant of "fuck you fatty, we're going nowhere".

Our so called President is playing golf while Pelosi, Mnuchin and Schumer are negotiating. All he did was sent his chief of staff (Mark Meadow) to the meeting. WTH! Where is the great negotiator. This is so freaking dumb. The people that elected him are even dumber.

No one cares about Trump, let him publicly veto Covid relief for 'the common man' and see how well that goes for him and the GOP.

I would love to see that thrown in his face as well. Biden has hundreds of examples to pick from -- but, yes, the weekend in which coronavirus relief ended should be near the top of that list. Is Trump a member of Congress? No. Is he the leader of the Republican Party? Yes. He should be using his political weight to influhuuhuuheeheeheeHAHAHAHAH oh man...Trump with political weight...man, I almost finished that sentence. Trump's been making random-ass requests like "FBI building" and "payroll tax cut" that even McConnell is openly saying "no, we're not doing that".

A real President, at this time, would be pushing a deal that meets bipartisan support. The Democrats not only don't want to work with Trump (bad for their election year image) they don't think he'll pay them and they don't think he'll survive re-election. A growing number of GOP members are on board with all three of those. Trump has become more hindrance than help to the party he took over and to the country in general -- and this happened a while ago, we're just seeing it in full display.

58,429 new cases; about 10k fewer than the previous Saturday and the first time since July 12th it was lower than 60k. There are some tiny embers of hope for the time being.

Florida: 9,642 new cases; 179 deaths
California: 7,382 new cases; 137 deaths
Texas: 6,720 new cases; 268 deaths
Georgia: 3,660 new cases; 73 deaths
Arizona: 2,992 new cases; 53 deaths
Tennessee: 2,225 new cases; 7 deaths
Illinois: 1,639 new cases; 8 deaths
Alabama: 1,626 new cases; 23 deaths
South Carolina: 1,583 new cases; 39 deaths
North Carolina: 1,264 new cases; 33 deaths
Oklahoma: 1,244 new cases; 8 deaths
Mississippi: 1,134 new cases; 30 deaths
Wisconsin: 1,062 new cases; 13 deaths
Maryland: 1,019 new cases; 13 deaths

No new records jump out at me, though some states are still trending up towards previous highs (Wisconsin had their second highest total of new cases today). It's the beginning of the weekend so totals will likely be underreported through to the end of Monday, but it's still good that they've been lower this entire week than the previous week. It's not done spreading in most states, but it appears the hardest-hit states have passed their peaks.

Deaths went above 1k for the 5th day in a row, as expected, ending at 1,123, about a couple hundred more than the previous Saturday, putting the total at 157,898. Nothing else to note since this is what we've all been saying will happen. It will likely continue to be over 1k next week after the weekend lull in reporting. The US will pass 160k on Tuesday, most likely.

    Stay safe, folks.
