Saying that throwing a milkshake at Farage is the wrong thing to do is not bloody well defending the man. It is just pointing out that "disagreeing" with a politician by throwing things at them is the wrong thing to do in a democracy.

Just as freedom of speech applies to people I neither like nor agree with. What a person deserves and what civilized democracy will do to them are two very different things.

In short: I don't think this will be anything other than a galvanising force for those on the hard right to think of / do much worse.

What's more powerful and relevant? A Led By Donkeys billboard or throwing a milkshake?
Oh, Led By Donkeys for sure. But make no mistake, neither LbD nor milkshakes will change anything about extremists. Not one thing. Everything they do is to spite you.

Yep, one group throws milkshakes, the other just kills politicians. Throwing food at politicians is as old as politics. It's not a problem. It's a friendly hint that these politicians are rotten assholes. What's troubling is if the mob starts getting the actual pitchforks out and guillotines are being erected.

Until that day, how about we chill out with a best of compilation of politicians being hit by edible stuff...

Seriously, getting all dramatic about this... with Farage no less, that's just wrong. He's lucky that wasn't me. I'd have pissed in the cup and stuffed his silly face with it.

Some extreme remainers would love and celebrate, are a hairs breadth from incitement, an escalation from milkshakes to something far more sinister.

    Was just exposing that...

Democracy only works when the losers accept they lost, as they will again on Thursday's confirmatory Brexit vote, but will they accept it this time? Or call for yet another peoples vote, how many more losses do they need?

Let's face it when even Donald Tusks best mate interfering in London is standing as an MEP for Mr 3% Chukkas CUK, when Farages BXP gets ten times as many votes will they still not get it?

Chief Eurocrat Donald Tusk meddles in British politics backing pro-EU Change UK who want to cancel Brexit

You can understand how moderates like me find some people so fanatical, and the steps they are prepared to take, about remaining in the EU.

Since there seem to be quite a few monocles popping out at the efforts of people to lactose the intolerant, I'd like to share an article that I think has some very salient points.

The biggest topic in British political circles on Monday wasn’t the country’s impending departure from the European Union. It was milkshakes—or, rather, one milkshake in particular that was lobbed by a bystander in Newcastle at Nigel Farage, a Brexit Party candidate in the European Parliament elections later this week.

Farage, the spiritual leader of the Brexit movement, quickly used the lactic confrontation to blame politicians who oppose him. “Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible,” he wrote on Twitter shortly after the incident. “For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers consent, politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this.”

The former UKIP Leader isn’t alone. In recent weeks, other far-right figures running for European Parliament seats have been met with dairy-centric direct action. Anti-racist protesters have targeted Tommy Robinson, the former leader of the English Defense League, with milkshakes on multiple occasions. Carl Benjamin, an alt-right YouTube personality who said last month he “wouldn’t even rape” a woman running against him, has been milkshaked (milkshaken?) four times in the past week.

Throwing a milkshake at someone is rude at worst. It may also qualify as assault in some jurisdictions, especially in the United States. British political and media figures condemned the incidents. Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said that politicians “should be able to go about their work and campaign without harassment, intimidation and abuse.” Tim Farron, the leader of the pro-Europe Liberal Democrats, said, “I’m not laughing along with the attack on Farage. Violence and intimidation are wrong no matter who they’re aimed at. On top of that, it just makes the man a martyr, it’s playing into his hands.”

What these critiques misunderstand is why milkshaking is so potent against Farage and his brethren: It humiliates them. Nothing animates the far right or shapes its worldview quite so much as the desire to humiliate others—and the fear of being humiliated themselves. It’s why alt-right trolls, projecting their own sexual insecurities, enjoy calling their opponents “cucks.” It’s why they rally around blustery authoritarian figures like Donald Trump who cast themselves as beyond embarrassment, shame, or ridicule. They brandish humiliation like a weapon while craving release from it.

Getting doused in a milkshake robs far-right figures of the air of chauvinistic invulnerability that they spend so much time cultivating. They hunger to be taken seriously despite their racist views. They want to be described as dapper, to be interviewed on evening news broadcasts and weekend talk-show panels, and to be seen as a legitimate participant in the democratic process. Most politicians to the left of Enoch Powell would brush off milkshaking as a harmless stunt. For those seeking mainstream legitimacy, it’s another searing reminder that they don’t belong.
Bolded for emphasis. This isn't an unsupported argument, either - part of the reason why the far right tries to delegitimize a free press is because it is unable to withstand ridicule. The ideology is based on a suspension of rationality and buying into banal, emotional impulses; so when that aura of mystique is disrupted by satire or mockery, it loses its effectiveness.

All it takes is one milkshake to turn "Our Nigel" into a sad, lactose-soaked old man being escorted back to his car for a binky and a hot chocolate. So stop your pearl clutching, it's not like they're driving a car into a rally or shooting someone in the head.

Not really. MPs will get to a vote on whether to have a vote. People's Vote MPs do not command a majority in the House of Commons.

    How is that supported though?

Are you sure that's how it works? There are plenty of thoroughly satirized movements that still exist and still attract new members. I'm sure both Labour and Conservatives had plenty of satire aimed at them, and i'm not seeing how far right are somehow particularly vulnerable - and there are plenty of intelligent variations to choose from for those that want rational right-wing arguments. Sure, most aren't interested in them but they do exist.

And sometimes people take mean-spirited "satire" badly too... like with Charlie Hebdo.

  15. #17055
So yeah, not much there really. As a piece of strategy, it is probably foolhardy in the traditional Theresa May way: Offering too little to bring opponents over, but enough to lose some of those who might have supported her from her side.
    Seems pretty accurate.

Amen, as comparing Farage's reaction to Ed Miliband's egging clearly shows. The actual politician takes his jacket off, laughs and carries on, while the fascist gets angry and leaves immediately while raging at his Arron Banks funded security team.

A fool is someone who proposes the same thing over and over again and yet expects a different result.

Remainers, Theresa May and fools have much in common. Ergo this "new" bill will not pass = no chance of another referendum.

    Bye Theresa.

    Fraser Anning, Donald Trump, etc.

It's almost as if fascists tend to be narcissistic little men with inferiority complexes.

Excellent. So since no-deal has already been voted down in Parliament, that leaves only two options; second referendum, or cancel Article 50. Since the Brexit crew are losing heavily in polls pitching Remain against either May's deal or no-deal, those mean basically the same thing.

So, shall we just cancel Article 50 right now, and then you can all go back to whining about how unfair it is for the rest of time? That would save time and money for all of us.
When challenging a Kzin, a simple scream of rage is sufficient. You scream and you leap.

To be fair dribs if you were actually serious about Brexit you would be cheering for this bill. Completely rules out a People's Vote because it would lose in a Commons vote and you would get your Brexit. But just as it has been from the get go it will be Brexiteers that fuck this up, not Remainers.

No audio and no security to shout at. Certainly doesn't take it with grace though and the guy got 28 days. Not sure whether Corbyn pressed charges or not, the Police can and will prosecute regardless if they think it's a slam dunk.
