NOAA US Winter Outlook: Prepare for Another Warmer Winter

A big chunk of the United States is likely in for another weirdly warm winter. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) just released its winter-weather outlook, and right now they’re calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures along the East Coast and the southern two-thirds of the country. The northwest corner of the U.S. could see some colder-than-average temperatures, but on the whole, the U.S. might be breaking a few heat records again.

October 19, 2017 Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center released the U.S. Winter Outlook today, with La Nina potentially emerging for the second year in a row as the biggest wildcard in how this year’s winter will shape up. La Nina has a 55- to 65-percent chance of developing before winter sets in.

Pretty stoked, a wet and cold La Niña usually means a great ski season for the Cascades. Time to start tuning the skis for the fresh gnar.

That's not what the weather forecasts are suggesting for Canada. We are gonna get lots of snow eh, so I guess we'll finally be able to rebuild our igloos and we better get the huskies into shape so they can pull the sleds for us while we eat poutine and drink maple syrup all winter.

How do you guys protect your maple syrup in that kind of weather? Asking for a friend.

This is bad news. I love snow and cold weather! Fortunately long range forecasts are notoriously bad.

I feel like it’s been well above normal in NJ, seems like every day is in the 70s. Hardly any color on the trees, and we’re closing in on Nov. I was up in the Finger Lakes in upstate NY last weekend and similarly only some color change (mid Oct. should be at or near peak color there) and temps in the low 70s.

Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh. You touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.

This shit happens all the time in NJ. The only odd thing is the leaves not falling, but the weather seems normal to slightly above normal. My birthday is early November, when I was a kid (90s) we'd almost always have some kind of outside party.

Sasquatch guards our trove of maple syrup flanked by Celine Dion and her horrible singing and Kathleen Wynne's misuse of Ontario taxpayer policies for his primary weapon.

On the front page of MMO-C this was shortened to "NOAA US Winter Outlook: Prepare for Another War..."

Well the Pentagon and RAND corp have studied climate change as a possible source for global conflict. Due to drought causing a loss of water and food security. I think congress has since killed those studies. /shrug

Guessing the weather for a whole season is impossible.

That said I always go with the Farmers Almanac's predictions they are by far the most accurate they have to be since people plan their planting around what they say. They are predicting a very wet cold winter.

Cygnus X-1 is armed and active at all times. Unfortunately some idiot was moving pictures and activated it's main laser system which converted the poor bastard into Justin Bieber. We had to deport him for that mishap.

They *claim* a high accuracy rate, but really have nothing to back that up. They've also had some big flubs, like predicting a harsh winter for 2012. Which ended up being one of the warmest recorded winters for the U.S.
