    Do I need to be exalted with them to get to the essence part of nighthold in the questchain ?

    Pretty sure he is correct. I've done it twice now and the second time all I did was the quest to get the chick to her cave and kill the tree ghost in there. Nothing further. It is possible that I already had rep from world quests though, but I'm not 100% sure.

    Honored with Farondis for the Draught. Revered with Nightfallen for the Scroll. Revered with Valajar to talk to Eyir.
    Senegos quest chain done. Moon Guard Stronghold quest chain done.
    I think those are the prerequisites for the whole questline.
