Pet battle is ok, it was never meant to be endgame competition.
But rgn is taking care of making pet battle unpopular

I can't get invested in or love Generic Spider #321.
If you're going to make a catch'em game the first thing you can do is make your creatures look cool so I care.

If Battle Pets was made its own IP, that had all the creative freedom and art funding that Hearthstone had, it might be fun. But without style it's basically pointless.
