Returning for its second year, the Gold Club World Championship (GCWC) will play host to eight of the top Heroes of the Storm teams in the world. The tournament begins November 27 and will see a selection of HGC teams battle for their portion of a $300,000 prize pool in Beijing, China.

The GCWC will serve as an exciting capstone for the 2017 calendar and a preview of things to come for the HGC in 2018. Here we will see newly assembled rosters face their first tests against top competition including giants like KSV Black (formerly MVP Black) and Ballistix, who might be testing out new lineups of their own. The GCWC field of teams represent the best in pro Heroes of the Storm, but these squads will have to earn their way to global events the hard way once the HGC's 2018 season gets going in January.

The teams participating in the 2017 Gold Club World Championship include:

    • Super Perfect Team (HGC China)
    • CE (HGC China)
    • Beyond the Game (HGC China)
    • Fnatic (HGC Europe)
    • Team Dignitas (HGC Europe)
    • Ballistix (HGC Korea)
    • KSV Black (HGC Korea)
    • Roll20 Esports (HGC North America)

The group stage of the event will run from 11/27–12/3 as a single round-robin with four matches per day. Each match will be a two-game set with two points awarded to a team for winning both games, and one point awarded to each team for a draw. Point totals from the round-robin group stage will be used to determine playoff seeding.

The broadcast for the group stage and playoffs will begin at 2:00 a.m. PST / 11:00 a.m. CET starting November 27.

When the group stage has concluded, there will be a two-day break as teams prepare for the playoffs, which will unfold at the Beijing National Aquatics Center (aka the "Water Cube") from 12/6–12/10. The playoff bracket will be double-elimination, with a best-of-five format for all matches. The broadcast for the playoffs will begin at 2:00 a.m. PST / 11:00 a.m. CET December 6, with the final broadcast day starting circa 9:00 p.m. PST on December 9 / 6:00 a.m. CET on December 10.

    • 1st place - $80,000
    • 2nd place - $70,000
    • 3rd place - $50,000
    • 4th place - $40,000
    • 5th & 6th place - $20,000
    • 7th & 8th place - $10,000

Ballistix will be looking to defend their GCWC title against KSV Black, the freshly crowned champions of the HGC. New Heroes Junkrat and the Life-Binder known as Alextrasza will be eligible for play. Make sure to catch all the action live at Twitch.tv/GCWC starting November 27.
For me, this tournament has a ton of hype around it. We get to see how well the new rosters are doing as well as that rare glimpse of how good the Chinese teams are when they're at full power!

KSV drafting Abathur on Braxis and going Monstrosity just shows you how little they think of NA.

They were quite a few levels ahead of everyone else at Blizzcon and now that every other big team went through roster changes they seem even further ahead.

That said I've also been impressed by Roll20. They seem at the same level they were pre-rosterpocalypse at the very least, and that's with a new roster.

I was mostly pro-Fnatic, but you just can't not like the current Dig. True power unleashed with Wubby and POILK. The former is just flat out the best sololaner in the world and the second has as good a mage roster as Mene (if you exclude Gul'dan and his whiffed horrifies) and another 564389 top notch carries.

So the nerfs to Supports happened, double Support still picked. No surprise, I still think Hyper Carries and Bruisers are the problem.

Yeah, it's a shame to see. I think most people weren't expecting the blanket 5% to actually fix much, it needs to be targeted and, in my opinion, focused on wave clear and not healing or health.

My worry for changing who they enable is how do you alter hyper carries without putting them in a position of being only hyper carries? For example, Valla is a typical hyper carry but she can work well as a normal damage. What changes can you make that mean she still works well in the normal role but not in the hyper carry?

Hyper carries being able to be hyper carries is fine. The problem is when it's the best choice most of the times. They don't want to eliminate double support altogether, just make it appear less.

Personally I'm still holding judgment. Teams only had 2 days between the patches, that's not enough time to shape the new meta.

Read that as "Golf Club" and was very confused why it was in the Heroes forum XD.

It felt oddly satisfying to watch Roll20 lose a pre-10 Warhead Junction against a standard comp.

Honestly I think the strongest Roll20 roster was Justing/Buds/Glaurung/Prismat/Yoda. They just don't feel like they...know how to finish a game? I feel like it is something that NA teams seem to have a problem with, they don't know how to end. And the current Roll20 team does not feel like they have a good carry, They got Justing for tank and Buds for heals which is solid, but the rest of the team just feels like flex....

And Goku? I will never forget him sucking on Li Li Dreamhack 2016, he picked the worst talent build on her and made her look horrible, I don't think I will ever be able to forgive him, he must know that he sucks at Li Li because he only played her once ever.

Very impressed by DIG's performance in general. They seem to be at about the same level they were pre-rosterswap and they will only get stronger from here on out.

POILK with very impressive performances in several heroes, but I have to say, his Gul'dan is underwhelming at best and it seems to be the hero he played the most.

KSV seem so far ahead of everyone else that it seems like people just play for 2nd in those tournaments.

Very much agreed. Happy as a Dignitas fan, but damn the KSV mountain seems steep!

Great tournament to close out 2017!

It was a bit boring to see the same heroes being picked all the time all over again. But well, that's pro meta and it's like that in every moba I guess.

HotS has the highest percentage of Heroes used I think. One of the main reasons being the different maps promoting different playstyles.

Honestly the change of timeslots really threw me off. I ended up missing the games because of that.

Took a deeper look at drafts in the playoff phase (cba doing it for the group stage, plus there were more meaningless games there) and from a total of 39 games, we saw the following:

    - 42 (out of 74) heroes appeared in total (14/19 warriors, 14/29 assassins, 12/14 supports and 2/12 specialists)
    - 4 heroes appeared in 25+ games
    - 6 heroes appeared in 20+ games
    - 12 heroes appeared in 15+ games
    - 15 heroes appeared in 10+ games
    - 24 heroes appeared in 5+ games

Obviously the 4 heroes from 25+ games are also included in the rest of the categories and so on.
    Top 10 heroes:

    1. Lucio (34)
    2. Greymane (29)
    3. Arthas (26)
    - Dehaka (26)
    5. Genji (22)
    6. Muradin (21)
    7. Kharazim (18)
    - Tyrael (18)
    9. Uther (17)
    - Valla (17)

I didn't look at bans so heroes like ETC (16), Genji (22) and Tassadar (10) had a lot higher draft participation. Lucio with a 87% pick rate (and a lot of it as first/second pick) is insane. Greymane should have similar participation rates as well, if we include bans.

    Top 5 per role:

    Warrior:

    1. Arthas (26)
    2. Dehaka (26)
    3. Muradin (21)
    4. Tyrael (18)
    5. ETC (16)

    Assassin

    1. Greymane (29)
    2. Genji (22)
    3. Valla (17)
    4. Li Ming (15)
    5. Guldan/Tracer (8)

    Support

    1. Lucio (34)
    2. Kharazim (18)
    3. Uther (17)
    4. Rehgar (12)
    5. Tassadar (10)

Abathur (8) and Medivh (1) were the only specialists.
