Not really the same country though, I mean I know Russia took the USSR's seat at the UN and is the legal successor state but from a sporting POV they are different countries with different territory and different athletes (half the Soviet players would have been ineligible to play for Russia). It's like comparing the English team to the British team from the Olympics.

I.E The USSR is (still) the most dominant team in the history of Olympic ice hockey, Russia are a joke by comparison, different players/team/country in sporting terms.
