I don't think there is such thing as inherently bad extremism. It's a label people give to various ideas which are outside the norm. If a view is popular, is it extremist in your mind? There was a time when most people wanted to ban homosexuality. As heinous as it is, at that time it wouldn't have been considered extremist. So I reject the term entirely; I think it's pointless.

We should be able to debate views without relying on such vapid labels.

Perhaps americans dont understand this, but in germany we had the "former" nazis as judges, politicians, journalists, office clark, business leaders for decades still in.

Now their children, some with a similar ideology, are still here. Its not a majority, but they are dangerous.
A underground nazi terror group could kill turkish people for a decade in germany whilst beeing protected by people in the secret services and police. The strongest organized neonazi movement in germany was actually financed and built from money the state gave its "undercover agents" from the state security ministry. Of course, those agents were nazis who worked as doubleagents, they used the money to organize and structure the nazi-organisation (google up Thuringer Heimatschutz). They knew everything about police actions, warrants, and searches before the exectuting police units knew. Those guys are dangerous, because they are protected by officials and clarks within the state, be it because of them sharing idiology or by not wanting to be exposed for their miserable fails (they wanted to infiltrate, but in reality they played a major role in building those organized structures).

Depends on the country I guess. In Sweden they are one of three defined extremist groups that are considered to be a threat, not to the nation but to individuals. The other two being left-wing extremists and Islamic extremists. Both the Neo-nazis and the left-wing extremist primarily target each other and political opponents such as journalists and politicians. Neo-nazis also target regular citizens with hate crimes. All three groups are about equal size in Sweden, with about 100-200 individuals in each group who are prone to violence. The right wing extremists have been shown to have access to weapons and explosives. In short, they certainly are a threat to individual citizens, but they are not a threat to the nation at this point.

Personally I'd consider the organized crime networks to be a much bigger threat to regular citizens than all three of the extremist groups. Gang related violence is abundant in the three major cities of Sweden, and while the risk of getting caught in their crossfire is minimal, it happens.
