The fundamental problem with DPS shaman was a lack of control, not damage....

Enhance had one of, if not the outright, highest single Global burst potentials in the game...... The problem was they had absolutely no control over it happening, it was pure RNG (random number generator..... or pure chance)..... You would White Swing/Stormstrike/Windfury/ Hand of Justice Trinket Proc for maximum output, and hope that every swing crit.

It wasn't just a lack of control over your damage, but also over your opponents.. Shaman where the only melee to not have a CC of any kind, which combined with their incredibly high -POTENTIAL- output, made them ideal targets to murder first. Furthermore (and particularly in enhancement's case) your Longevity in team fights was among the shortest of all specs because you where mana limited, where the Rogues/Warriors weren't and you could oom yourself quickly when forced to use all your utility. Rets also had that problem, but where both more efficient damage wise, as well as heal wise.... albeit at the expense of their offensive potential and offensive utility.

Ele on the other hand, could do wonderful damage, but unlike Lock/Mage was more hampered by their lack of control to set up their nukes, which could give them problems vs Melees.

In both cases, the Shaman was a viable class with solid gear, but acquiring that gear could be a challenge without swapping to heals to raid.... That being said, also in both cases, I think a person maining a DPS shaman would probably be happier overall by maining something like a Warrior (instead of Enhance) or a Lock/Mage (instead of Ele)

I will be playing a prot warrior. Played a lock for classic, rolled a prot paladin in BC. Want to try vanilla tanking now.

All 3 shaman specs were fantastic in PvP, resto and a good warrior buddy was absolutely hilarious, windfury totem was just the best thing ever, enhancement was very fun, although RNG reliant, sometimes you would proc WF and absolutely demolish someone, sometimes you just got unlucky with no procs.
But even so with shocks, grounding, tremor, poison cleansing totems and purge... you were god damn terrifying to alot of classes, especially if you actually got geared and got a good 2h (saw someone here commenting on 1h enhancement, that was in BC, in vanilla you couldn't dual wield).

And elemental was just hilarious in BGs, purge all buffs, hots and shields, and land a nice lightning bolt, chain lightning, earth shock combo... with the travel time of the lightning bolt, all 3 of those spells would land at the same time, get a lucky crit or the guaranteed crit damage talent at the end of your tree, and alot of the time you would simply destroy someones health from full to zero.

Shamans were just allround fantastic in PvP, regardless of spec, especially if they were actually good and would properly use purges and focus target interrupts on healers and such, a PvP healer with that ammount of offensive pressure combined with a WF totem for the group was amazing.
