Why do people want patch 1.0?

I don't understand people who want "pure" patch 1.0. It was absolutely horrid, even by vanilla standards. If you think 1.12 is rough and tough, patch 1.0 is fucking balls-to-the-wall hardcore badly designed, in comparison.

    • Talents were atrocious
    • Spells and spell balance were atrocious
    • Class balance in general was nonexistent
    • Itemization was pure garbage, with some items being shit and others being heinously OP (there was a neck, and offhand, that both gave -25% mana costs. Yes, 25 percent)
    • Auction houses weren't linked, so everyone was at Org or Ironforge, causing tons of lag
    • Flight paths weren't connected, so you had to manually fly to a flight point, then talk to the flight master again and fly to the next FP, again and again, until you reach your destination
    • Mana regen stopped while you were casting a spell (not just finishing the cast, but during the cast bar, your mana regen stopped)
    • Warrior threat was garbage (wait for 5 sunders, anyone?)
    • Paladins did nothing but autoattack the boss while buffing the entire raid with 5-minute buffs
    • Or, just standing back out of range in order to stay out of combat and rez people...fun times, eh?
    • There weren't enough quests to hit 60, you had to literally grind mobs from level 52/53 all the way to 60
    • So many abilities were bugged and not working properly
    • Raid teleports did not exist, so if you wanted to do Molten Core, you literally had to have your entire raid go through BRD to get to the MC entrance. Same with BWL, inside Blackrock Spire.
    • There was no diminishing returns on any kind of CC, so Warlocks could perma-fear you even while DoTs were ticking
    • Certain rogue abilities did not scale with anything, so a naked rogue Eviscerate would do the exact same damage as a full T3 rogue Eviscerate
    • the list goes on...

The big one though being the class balance / talents. They were just...fucking horrid garbage, designed by devs who were basing the game on Diablo 2, an entirely different genre of game. Talents in general were fucked. Priest had a talent that increased defense rating, and the 31-point Holy talent was Holy Nova, and it only dealt damage. Mage had to put FIVE POINTS into a talent just to make Arcane Explosion instant cast. Every Warrior was Arms, even tanks, because Mortal Strike did so much damage. Holy Shock dealt only damage, no healing, and the Ret 31-pointer was Kings. Feral's 31-pointer was "reduces shapeshift costs by 20%", and Balance had a talent that increased weapon damage. And the most infamous, was Survival's 31-pointer, that did something like 161 damage at level 60....and it was a DoT. 161 damage over 24 seconds. A level 60 ability that ticks for 20 damage every 3 seconds.

And then you had to deal with only 1 or 2 classes getting updated talents in each patch, which just drove the forums to madness, overflowing with cries of "WHAT? THAT OTHER CLASS GOT NEW TALENTS BUT MY CLASS DIDN'T? RIOT NOW!!!", leading to the infamous Bus Shock incident. We would have a playerbase divided by who has the new talents and who is still stuck with the garbage talents. Is this really what you want?

    -----

I really don't want to re-live all that bullshit. I'd rather just have 1.12 spells/talents with progressive content release, like all the private servers have been doing. Not just vanilla, but EVERY expansion private server does this; they go with the final patch of the expansion. BC does 2.4.3, WOTLK does 3.3.5, etc. The reason why pservers go with the final patch is because that is the most developed and polished version of that expansion.

Start with 1.12 talents/spells with just MC+Ony and all the normal dungeons (no Mara or DM) then go from there and add dungeons/raids with the patches as normal.

And I can already hear the cries, "b-b-b-but with 1.12 t-talents, vanilla won't b-be HARD!!!"

There is no way to make vanilla raids and dungeons "hard" without significantly changing them. We already know everything about the game. We already know what the best gear is, and the best specs are, and all the best strategies for every single boss. We all have stable connections, gaming computers that get 60fps at all times, a massive library of helpful addons, and extensive knowledge of how to play our classes to their fullest potential. And on top of all this, players today are just overall better than they were back in 2004. There are 5man bosses in retail that are more complex and difficult than end-raid bosses in vanilla; that alone shows how much player skill has progressed.

Increasing boss health won't make them harder, just take longer to kill. Increasing their damage won't make them harder, just make tanks require more gear/more healers. Changing their mechanics would make it not vanilla anymore.

The only way to make vanilla hard would be to erase all of our memories about it. Which obviously can't happen. Expecting vanilla to be as challenging as it was back in 2005 is dumb and impossible. Vanilla was never hard, we were just noobs with bad spells/talents, bad itemization, bad computers, bad connections/servers, and not much info about the encounters. Even if we were to bring back the bad spells/talents/itemization, we still have the knowledge of our classes and the raid encounters, which trivializes them still.

1.12 adds catchup mechanics, encounter changes, and class alterations that trivialised lower end content. It was a patch that lasted for less than 6 months until TBC. I'd agree 1.0 is too early because of the huge number of class changes that were pushed between 1.0 and 1.12, but to start on and stay on a patch that didn't even last for 6 months is lunacy.

    That didn't rly change tbh.

BWL wasn't released until well after UBRS had been capped at 15.

DR was added very early. It was amended to include certain spells later on.

The rest of it you'll just get 'WELL WE LIKED IT THAT WAY' responses so let the vanilla zombies enjoy their plate of shit.

There are other threads discussing which patch is best for Classic WoW.

    Closing.
