    Leveling during the trial

    Hello, all

I recently started playing FFXIV on a trial account, and I'm really enjoying it so far. The early quests are a little dull, but I've heard from a number of sources that it gets better, so I'm pushing through!

Anyway, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to get all of the classes (or jobs, I keep getting confused on what they should be called) up to level 35 (the trial's level cap) before converting my account over to the full version? My thinking is, get the early leveling done now, while I can do so for free, and then focus on higher level things once I have to start my subscription.

I'm currently a level 32 Marauder, and I haven't even touched the other ones.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm just used to most other mmos where you select one class and stick with it, then re-role another character entirely if you ever decide to try something new.

    Thanks!

Classes are what the starting playable roles are from 1-30, after that they can become their respective jobs. No new classes have been added, from HW onward only jobs get added (the HW ones start at 30 and the SB ones at 50).

As for leveling the others, I say 'if it looks fun, try it!' Don't feel forced to play any of them. Also, you might want to try Palace of the Dead (POTD) out as a way to quickly check out how the various classes evolve (up to a point, I think trials can't go past level 50/Floor 40) for a better look at what's in store for them. Also a way to help level them quickly, period.

I didn't even know about the POTD, it looks interesting. I'll have to check that out soon.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

By "early quests are a bit dull" are you talking about side quests? Those are largely ignored by a lot of people these days, tastes varying.

Yeah, it must be the side quests. The actual story ones aren't too bad. It's just the running back and forth repeatedly between the same NPCs that makes it kinda slow. I'm still thoroughly enjoying it, but there have been a few times where I just didn't want to run back to the same area that I just came from, to pick up a flower that I probably could have just grabbed the first time around.

I did get to go try the POTD last night, and it seems pretty fun. The only problem is, that as a trial I can only do the first ten floors of it. And, that's on me for wanting to hold off on actually spending money. (Trying to prolong the trial until payday...)

I think I'll just try to focus on the class quests and the few semi-important ones I come across in addition to becoming incredibly familiar with those first ten floors of the Palace.

    You have several types of quests, but these two are the mainly used ones;
Main Scenario Quests (MSQ in short)
    Spoiler:

    And regular side quests
    Spoiler:

I highly recommend you skip the regular quests and aim for the MSQ in order to advance the story and unlock stuff later on. You are free to go and do them on other classes/jobs you have below your main class (your highest/the one you want to play as most) as they grant some experience points for those.
Although, should you see some quests that looks like the regular side quests icon, have a blue background and a "+" sign added to it, I recommend you do that quest as you will unlock something, as in a new class, beast tribe or just a new feature being available for you.

For instance, this is the Thaumaturge guild/class reception (quest available if you choose a class different than Thaumaturge as your starting class) and she's got a blue quest for you.
    Spoiler:

Once you accept it and complete it, you unlock the Thaumaturge class which can be easily accessed by equipping a Thaumaturge weapon of your level.

In other games such as WoW (World of Warcraft), you only have one class to worry about, as you cannot change class or anything other than professions there.
In FFXIV however, you can become anything regarding classes (and later the advanced classes: jobs). You can become a Marauder, Conjurer, Rogue, anything that is available to you, as long as you have a weapon for the class you want to become and that weapon meets the level requirements.

Later at level 30 you get a class quest for the class you are currently playing with the option to become a class that is further advanced than what you are currently playing; that is called a job. For a Marauder, the job (advanced class) they get is Warrior, which brings on more of the good stuff once you get your level higher and is also a tank.
The main difference is the Arcanist which has 2 jobs linked to it; Summoner (SMN, dps job) and Scholar (SCH, healing job) and they have equal experience as they share the same base class (you should rather try playing it to get what I mean).

There are endless options regarding what you opt in for; if you want to play a class/job, just get your weapon and gear ready and you are ready to go (until you come late game and start doing some real strategic stuff such as raiding or crafting/gathering).

The only thing you really can't do is to have more than 3 specialist crafters, but that's another issue to do at 60+ with your crafting class(es).
