Why do some people get so defensive when someone says ANYTHING negative about WoW?

Seriously...the way some people react on here whenever someone criticizes WoW in any way or says something they disagree with is so over the top. You'd think you'd just punched their newborn child in the face.

It's a discussion forum, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you need to react like it's some sort of grave insult...

Is this your first day on the Internet or something?

No, but the problem is WAY worse here than anywhere else. Even the official forums aren't this over the top

It's a flawed association where the person confuses criticism with something they like with criticism of themselves and their decisions. There's a technical/medical term for it, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head.

There's also a HEAVY dose of tribalism involved as well. E.G.: If you don't like the same things I like, you are the enemy.

Throw all of that on top of a basic inability to think critically or objectively, and mix it with a 99.9999% level of anonymity that being on the internet provides....well...there you have it.

well people will always look stuff trough their rose tinted glasses and cant accept that someone who is "bashing" their favourite game is right that goes for all games, wow, league, dota, PUBG etc.

here is an example, a few days ago on the pubg reddit i commented on a post that the game shouldnt be version 1.0 at this stage of the game, as the game doesnt feel finished with all the crashes, freezes, fps drops, lag, unstable server tick etc. and ofc i got attacked by diehard fans who cant accept the truth, i didnt bash the game cuz i hate it (i like playing it, its just feels more like beta than a release title), was just expressing my opinion, by doing that bluehole is selling what feels like an unfinished product

Right. I just think it's funny and kinda pathetically sad at the same time how people take deep offensive to someone else being "wrong" . Why not let them be "wrong" ?

    Very well said. This.

If a person is passionate about something (regardless of if it's religion, a sports game, a video game console or video game), they tend to value it almost like a part of themselves, their life. If someone criticizes whatever they are passionate about, to them it's very similar to criticizing them, as such they can often take it as a personal insult and thus become very defensive about it. This is a video gaming forum which is focused around WoW, therefore there will naturally be a lot of people who are very passionate about WoW here, therefore criticizing WoW on this forum can lead to rather defensive responses.

So I'm guessing you've never talked to anyone about sports, politics or religion.

People identify with their opinions. If you critisise their opinion, they take it as a personal attack.

As to MMO-C specifically, I've seen it both ways, there's some people that won't accept any statement supporting the game or any of its elements, and will use any excuse to take the discussion somewhere else to complain about something irrelevant to the topic.

People have strong opinions about things they like, it can be fan-boism I guess, but you also got to take in mind whats considered honest criticism and trolling... The trolling on this forum is crazy, as well as general stupidity. No matter where you go, the larger the population the bigger the reactions. :P

I have been attacked for actually saying I like WoW on these forums, or liking aspects... The other side of the coin is just as extreme.

Plus do people even visit the official forums anymore?

Nah, its just MMO-C that is like this. It took Retail forum's spot as the most angry community, probably even worse than reddit these days

I love it tho, best place to read all kinds of comments

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's weird how a fan site is even more rabid in their defense of Blizzard than Blizzards own forums

That's not even remotely true. I know people weren't exactly kind in your last thread, but that's a bit of a leap.

The reality is that you're expecting a bunch of socially inept people to be socially civilized.

If someone bashes something I like, do you know what I do? Absolutely nothing! I like what I like and can care less about what someone else thinks about what brings me enjoyment/entertainment/happiness/etc. I guess some people have some really thin skin and get offended by the smallest things in life, like someone saying something bad about a video game they enjoy.

That means you're a well adjusted human being who can think rationally. Quite a rarity around here

It looks to me that you made a thread in which most people disagreed with and now you open a new one to complain about it...

See this is how I tend to react. I never really complain either, it also comes to knowing what a troll post is to whats an actual constructive thread is. The title of a thread alone makes me think "Is this thread worth delving into" :P

At the end of the day ask yourself "Are you enjoying the game?" if you are then why would you care what others think.

Your own enjoyment > Everyone else'

People are defensive about things, and even irrational at some points.
