you couldnt be more wrong - yes farmers in china are relatively poor but specialised worker in factory makes monthly 2000-3000$ - thats why production is escaping from china already atm .

The quoted paragraph in the arcticle pretty much nailed it.

China's central government dictated X growth, so the regional provinces delivered the number and massaged everything deeper in the data. It's very likely China spent some part of the Great Recession in Recession itself and not, you know, growing 9%.

This is why, if we took a time machine back to 2002, all those ridiculous predictions that China would be the world's largest economy by 2014 have not come remotely true. Because China fudges its numbers. It reports a growth number, but the GDP number doesn't actually increase by that much exactly, or gets "revised" later. As a result "China as the world's largest economy" is now on the other side of 2030. Guess what? It's going to keep moving ever further into the future.

And there is an even larger question. Does this matter? GDP is kind of a shit metric for a lot of reasons. It's like using the Dow to say something about the economy. It's a data point, not THE data point.

The US aims for about 3% GDP because that's what was historically needed to keep low unemployment with a population growing at its recent rate. That's a pretty good use of GDP. When the GDP is up, its up. When its down, it's down. Just the facts. There has even been some discussion in recent years that how the US measures GDP, which is more stringent than 20 years ago, may be comparatively reducing the number (that is to say, we're comparing apple sand oranges). That's another debate, but it again leads to the question: "who cares?".

But the Chinese government is all about superlatives because its a form of propaganda to its people. "Biggest that", "Fastest this". It validates the authoritarian regime there and their hold on power and becomes a form of "deliverable" to the people they rule. They will never show anything other than growth because then they can't say "we've had 110 consecutive quarters of >6% growth" or something.

Everything in China has to be looked at through the lens of a civil society that has very low incentive to operate professionally or impartially, and a regime that has very little incentive to give an honest accounting about the leading justification it has for ruling 1.2 billion people.

thats only half truth - the price that all companies that wanted cheap labor in china for past 20 years was acces to all the technology - yes chinese knock-offs arent as good yet but they are becoming more and more mainstream with each year. lets take example of xiaomi

the other extremly important factor you forget about its that china is 1,5 bln people market - its a wet dream of every single company in the world - if any product becomes popualr in china it makes people rich overnight.
