Is it time an indie game wins GOTY?

This game got the same IGN score as Breath of the Wild!

Celeste however faces some tough competition!

Will history be made at this years game awards? Will Madeline be able to climb this mountain of competition? Tune in December 2018!

TellTale isn't a indie company they are a AA company.

Ontopic: Game of the Year rewards in the end are dumb because GOTY is a opinion only. What one person finds to be GOTY another may think its a average game at best.

Example: Breath of the Wild won GOTY, I personally feel its average at best and the worse Zelda game made.

Since you're referring to IGN, an indy game already won their GOTY. Journey in 2012.

Telltale is NOT a AAA company, not even close.

    Their own description:

"Telltale Games is an award-winning independent developer and publisher founded by games industry veterans. Since our beginning in 2004, Telltale has pioneered the creation and delivery of episodic gaming content. Telltale‘s titles have won numerous awards and accolades from publications such as IGN, Official Xbox Magazine, PlayStation – The Official Magazine, PC Gamer, GameSpy and more, and our work has met with critical acclaim from mainstream outlets including USA Today, CNN, The New York Times and Variety."

I guess it flew over your head that something can be both not AAA and not indy?

He literally said Telltale was not an Indie company when they are in fact indie. They are independent, the definition of an indie company.

AA companies exist and are different from small indie operations or full AAA studios. I mean, they're technically "indie" in that they're usually not owned by a publisher, but places like Telltale, WayForward, or Obsidian have hundreds of employees and absolutely wouldn't fall under anything that anyone would generally associate with "indie".

Exactly, under that same flimsy definition CDPR is indy and I don't see anyone in this real world universe describing Witcher 3 as an indy game.

Depends on if the Indie Game regardless of score actually sells to a Majority of Gamers. People often forget that many Indie games that are highly praised are also usually for niche Audiences.

For example, I absolutely love Hollow Knight. It is an amazing indie game. Yet 9/10 people I bring it up with don't even know what I'm talking about. Compare that to something like Farcry or Zelda.

You're out of your mind if you think a David Cage game is winning GOTY awards, and I actually like David Cage games.

The games you forgot where Spider-Man, God of War, MHW and whatever Nintendo is hiding up their sleeves for their major release this year. None of the games you listed besides RDR2 will even sniff major GOTY awards.

And Game of the Year has nothing to do with sales, if it did it would be CoD every single year. Game of the Year is determined by critical reception, just as Academy Awards are determined by critics and not ticket sales.

And Madden as well as FIFA.

Sales generally reflect reception. If an Indie game sells extremely well it would have a much better chance at GotY than a niche game that is only praised by their niche audience. Also CoD isn't an Indie game so that is irrelevant to the point I was making.

While both have strong revenue (especially FIFA), I don't believe either comes close to the sales of CoD annually. CoD routinely tops platform digital sales for the year in the barely 2 months it's out.

Except that sales for an indie game also don't determine its GotY status so...I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

You keep bringing up sales. When I didn't even mention it in my first point.

Good thing I said AA and not AAA....

There is a massive difference in a indie developer that is a team of 5 (example) and a small independent company. THQ Nodic is a AA company, They are not owned by a big AAA publisher nore are a big AAA developer, but they are not a small indie group ether and the same apply's to TellTales.

I know the term AA company has been lost over the years but it is a thing.

By ur logic CDPR is a indie company....

I will not accept Affirmative Action for my games. If an indie game is good enough, it would win.
