Lor'themar Theron has been leading the blood elves of Silvermoon since Kael'thas left for Outland the better part of a decade ago. He was an experienced military leader before being given the position, essentially having Sylvanas' old position as Ranger-General. With help from Halduron and Rommath has managed to reclaim much of Quel'Thalas and restore Silvermoon. He has much the same background as Sylvanas, nearly as much experience (having been her second in command and successor) and joined the Horde only about a year after her.

If he were to take the mantle of Warchief in BFA he would have essentially the same resume that Sylvanas did at the start of Legion.

And neither of them have alot of experience in fighting pitched battles and seiges.

Kelthas took the bulk of the blood elf army to outland where it was destroyed / fel to the legion. The new blood elves are mostly rangers like lothermar who specialise in gorilla warfare and the new blood knights who now make up the main battle line with the blood golem's as seen in wod and legion in the suramar campaign.

Lor'themar was Sylvanas's second, he outranked people like Alleria etc.

Sylvanas lead the armies of Silvermoon against the orcs when they invaded, and the Forsaken fought and beat the Alliance on multiple fronts in Cata.

Etrigg, served under Blackhand just like Saurfang etc.

Sylvanas and lothermar are gorilla warfare specialists. When fighting the Orcs and Undead they waged a hit and run defence with the main defence of the city under the command of someone else.

The undead in cata never successfully fought a conventional pitch battle and always had to resort to mass bombardment with the plague. See south shore and the end of gilneas.
