Official High Elf Discussion Megathread

I genuinely feel bad for the majority of the pro High Elf community who conducted themselves honourably throughout this entire debate. You may not believe that, but it is true. I take no joy in the sadness they now feel as their hopes for playable Alliance High Elves finally come to an end. The main source of my joy this evening is the validation of everything I have ever said, that Blood Elves are the true High Elves, that they are a core part of the Horde, and that the faction wall is important to maintain.

But it is also true that there are several posters, on both sides mind you, who have NOT conducted themselves honorably. And those on the pro High Elf who have not conducted themselves honorably have from time to time seen fit to single me out for personal attacks.

I am not a robot, and I have not appreciated being targeted in such a way.

So for THOSE particular players, and only those, I have schadenfreude. And I am entitled to that. Is it childish? Yes, I acknowledge it is, but I am still Human, and I cannot change how I am experiencing those emotions. That will in time pass, schadenfreude is not what is going to give me joy in the longterm.

What has made me happy is what I said has made me happy, the validation of everything I have ever argued. What Ion said is exactly how I see things and I am glad he, and clearly the wider team at Blizzard, agrees.

There were two theories behind pro High Elfers rejecting the last interview Ion gave.

1.) Ion didn't know what he was talking about, Ion was caught on the hop by an unexpected question, Ion is an idiot.

and the Flubberpaddy theory

2.) Ion was secretly engaged in a disinformation campaign to mislead players into believing High Elves wouldn't become playable, because to do so on the day Void Elves were announced would steal thunder from the Void Elves. (This one is not really accepted outside Flubberpaddy).

The difference this time is that the pro High Elf community has spent the past six months organising forum threads, setting up their own discord, DeicideUH writing that manifesto, Taliesin and Evitel doing that video, seeing a few High Elves added to the beta, and actively misinterpreting developer responses or community management as expressing support for their position.

In the past few weeks, the pro High Elf community seemingly came to the conclusion they had the momentum behind them, that Blizzard was listening and that it was going to be a matter of time and persistence but that Blizzard would eventually commit to giving High Elves to the Alliance.

Which is why Ion's comments are much more devastating this time around. He repeated what he said in the earlier video, expanded on the reasons why High Elves weren't being added and confirmed the importance of the faction wall.

In other words, he validated the entire Anti High Elf position and showed that the efforts of the pro High Elf community had, after nearly seven months, amounted to nothing.

Yeah, I get all that. But if they actually want people to stop pestering them about it, they probably shouldn't use the same response that people were pestering them about before. It won't do anything to deter the people frothing at the mouth from the last response to them. There are plenty of ways he could say it to get people to stop, but I don't expect there to be any change like this. I also don't think your take on the situation is really correct, since I don't think he wanted to actively antagonize people over it.

High Elves
Blood Elves are basically High Elves. Slightly different eye color and backstory, but if you want to be a light skinned elf, that is basically a Blood Elf. Giving that to the Alliance would blur the line between factions.
There aren't a ton of High Elves out there in WoW.
If you are Alliance any want to be an elf, the Horde is there for you.

I think that ion's personal position is that he is also anti high elf. Only the future will tell what will happen.

I take that quote to mean that they're not such a big group that they can't be ignored when it comes to playable races. On the other hand, Void Elves have unique features that Blizzard feels makes them more compelling as an option for a playable race. The reasons with real weight were that Blood Elves are high elves, and that giving a race with the fantasy of high elves to the Alliance would blur the lines of the two factions. In the same way that you can say that Taliesin came to an opinion from a balanced point of view, I don't think it's fair to think that the game director has some kind of vendetta against this specific race. They just have difference criteria for evaluating those decisions.

Daz we've debated this for years, and we had the space to debate it because Blizzard never gave an official comment on the matter.

That's gone now and hoping Ion alone is preventing playable High Elves from being a thing, so that if he leaves the possibility returns, is just false hope. The population issue was mentioned again, but he mentioned the REAL reason it hasn't happened, the reason I've said all along.

It just breaks the faction wall too much.

Why do we even need more elves? For what? There already are 4(!) elf races and the last two added (Void Elves and Nightborne) are shit by both lore and looks. But hey, at least they are better than vulpera I guess.

I do find it interesting that the devs really could have kind of avoided this. I remember when Void Elves were announced and people were actually pretty excited because it assumed they were High Elves (as in, not Blood Elves) under the tutoring of Alleria who had learned to harness the void but been changed by it. However then they announced that they were actually Exiled Blood Elves (and a very small contingency of High Elves, as seen in the unlock scenario) where people got a little bit annoyed with it.

It was a minor story thing to literally just write that ALL of the remaining High Elves had followed under Alleria and become Void Elves, it would have quelled a lot of the annoyance AND enabled them to be their own thing.

Whether you like his position or not, he has conducted himself quite well throughout this tiring discussion. There were respectful contributions from either perspective, they only added more to the discussion overall. And there were others that didn't add anything. But the discussion was entertaining when it was positive. He's tipping his hat off to those that deserve due praise.

Though I enjoy that the ones celebrating Ion's statement ITT are blood elf fans. Now it's all going to be "based Ion" from them, even though his shitty GCD philosophy and artifact power 2.0: necklace edition is terrible. But now he's going to be supported by them just because of that - they actually managed to go from ruining the game figuratively to ruining the game literally, that's kinda impressive.

I seriously see no reason why Blizzard wouldn't add High Elves... They did add Void Elves which are just Blood Elves with different skin color and hair... So their "they're blood elves but with different eyes" argument is blank. Lighforged Draenei are Draenei but with golden eyes and tatoos. Nice argumentation Blizz.

I'm not saying that I would make High Elf for myself, but rather I'd like to see stop threads like this to appear. High Elves are wanted since... TBC/Wotlk, same for ogres for the horde... And it's getting what? Nightborne? Laughable.
