If it's just going to be another adaptation of the LotR trilogy of books, then I won't bother. We already have three 10/10 films, and I sincerely doubt the new adaptation would be able to exceed what has already been done, or execute well what hasn't.
If it's a new, original story set within the Tolkien universe, then I might check it out. Depends on how much they Hollywood-bastardize the IP. If there's a tidbit of restraint, I might check out the first episode. On the other hand, if the cinematography, sets, and props are Marco Polo quality, then I'll watch it just for that.
If they deleted every single scene with that elf chick and Legolas, maybe.

He said he wanted casting decisions to be representative of the setting as it was desired by the author of the source material. There is nothing wrong with this. Go breathe into a paper bag and calm down.

That makes a fair amount of sense. Aragorn's younger adventures are alluded to but never covered in detail. There is plenty of room to expand the narrative without stomping on source material.
Depends on how he passed down the rights. Disney has been extending copyrights ad infinitum because Disney has never technically died, and Walt Disney put all the rights in the company.
That being said, I don't think Tolkein set up an LLC or anything, and the rights reside in his estate, managed by his son. So they'll probably expire in the foreseeable future.

If there was any doubt...Now recently longtime Lord of the Rings fansite TheOneRing.net revealed that a new casting call has gone out for Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series by BGT Casting. The casting call mentions “actors must be comfortable with nudity”.
The good sir and his son are writhing in their graves.
LotR isn't Game of Thrones. If you want to make Game of Thrones, make your own. Don't try to contort someone else's lovingly created story into your shitty GoT fanfic. If you're going to adapt something, fucking adapt it. How insecure you must be about your own art that you have to try to bait people in with the name recognition of a childhood story they loved so you can try to thrust your shitty GoT fanfic on them, rather than selling your story for it's own merits to the people who actually like that kind of stuff.
Fuck amazon...the last thing I want to see in lotr is dwarven ass.
After reading some of the criticism Jackson's LOTR was doled out here in these forums, I think Amazon is going to show everyone that it could have been a lot worse.

While I concede the plausibility of the former, the latter however? Where was this at in the books?
The nudity is what made the books so great. Right? Right.
Show creators foam at the mouth any time they get an opportunity to ruin the core of an "adaptation" as they call it and alienate fans.. they're more like bastardizations and the large majority of them end up sucking. The hobbit movies were dogshit compared to lotr , literally all CGI with low preproduction time just to make money as they were highly anticipated unlike the first movie(s) where they took a huge risk and planned every detail, used tons of extras, props, costumes etc and little CGI as it was more expensive back then.
Nowadays CGI is probably cheaper than using props and extras, so I don't have any high hopes for the series in the first place. I highly doubt the time and patience will go into this show that is required to make it good and meet expectation without interference from higher ups. I am almost positive it will suck, but hey more lotr right we're gonna watch it anyway. Nudity makes no sense but it doesn't surprise me, like I said it will probably suck lol. This kind of thing needs to be a passion project with lots of freedom and support but its probably just to make a check like the hobbit was.
I'll be giving it a pass, I think.
The movies weren't perfect but they were clearly made with a lot of respect and love for the source material. The entertainment industry has done very little in recent years to convince me that such a drive still exists. There's too many smug, loud voices who love the idea of trying to change things for the sake of changing them.
truth is i was disappointed when they announced it anyway although i love the books (despite thinking they do not hold up against todays novels) and really liked the first three films but there are soooo many amazing series to choose from, why just keep rolling this one out?
no one knew about the GoT novels before the show and it became the one of the most successful shows ever (i havent researched that but it must be something like true)
When you consider how poor the books become after 2/3, thats a great achievement. Imagine what could be done with the black company first trilogy (this was optioned but not sure what that means), parts of the Malazan books like chain of dogs, riyria, kings of the wyld as just 4 that popped into my head in the first 30 seconds of thinking.
but no we get this, what seems to be a LOTR Porn parody if you take ring in a different context (thats a joke that may only work in northern england where ring is a colloquialism for your arse hole)
They shouldn't copy Game of Thrones, since it ended in complete failure and its cultural heritage was destroyed. Even the show-runners admitted recently that they would've changed a lot of things if they could. Maybe the gratuitous nudity is one of those.
Can't wait for an edgy fanfic that completely misses the point of the Lord of the Rings.
Maybe they'll subvert expectations and make a faithful adaptation...without the nudity. (Paging baba Ji)
