UK heatwave shuts part of Leeds & Liverpool canal

Wow that's a considerable length of canal

A 55-mile section of Britain's longest canal could close for a month unless there is significant rainfall.

From 30 July, the Canal and River Trust will close locks along the Leeds & Liverpool route amid water supply concerns.

While the closure will prevent boats travelling from Wigan, through Lancashire, and up to Gargrave, near Skipton, the towpath will stay open.

The trust said the closure is likely to last throughout August.

Trust spokesman Daniel Greenhalgh said it had been "a difficult decision" to close the canal, and that it had been working with boating businesses to offer alternative routes.

Sarah Toole, who often visits the canal at Barrowford in Lancashire, said it was a "necessary evil" to maintain water levels.

Daniel Greenhalgh from the Canal and River Trust said it had been "a difficult decision"
But Martin Cleaver, who runs a day-trip boat on the canal at Foulridge near Colne, said tourism would suffer.

He said: "We pass 10 or 12 boats a day, that's quite a lot of people on holiday, and when you're on holiday you spend money.

"If you've hired a boat and want to travel on the canal, you can't do and the knock-on effect will be for the pubs, where boats pull in and have a meal."
Must admit its only rained here 3x in 6 weeks

And next week supposed to be hottest yet this year. Right now they don't see the end to this, madness. Before people again start saying "lol it aint even hoot brah"
Yes it is for us, it's unusual for UK to have more than 1 day of sunshine, this has been going on for over 6 weeks with not a rain drop in London.

Someone left the lock open and it drained, it's barely related to weather at all.

For those to put it in perspective, this has been the best summer of my lifetime that I can remember. By best I mean, least amount of rain and I live in a valley where rainfall is among the highest in the country and we've barely had any, been a few decent sized bush fires on the hills too. Of course it's not california but a lot more than we are used to in the UK with our usually mild wet climate all year round.
Probably running on a Pentium 4

Britain cut its forests down a long time ago to build ships. It's not a recent change.

Of course your truck caused it, thats why you have to pay more in fuel prices and carbon tax ( like me in canada) . Dont worry though they are working on harnessing the power of unicorn farts and people getting angry about nomenclature to power our trucks

You'd be quite surprised how extensive the woodland and forests are in the UK.

It's raining right now in Cheshire, it's definitely cooled down quite a lot in the North West of England this last two weeks.
